is this true? i found a th400 output shaft and the guy says.."It was mated to a NP208 transfercase, but I believe it should fit a NP205 as well" is this true?

As long as the TH400 is a 32 spline getup (which I do believe that the TH400 / NP208 combo was) you should be able to get away with it with the correct adapter. There might be issues with the length of the output shaft though...
