i jus aquired my dad's old truck: 1978 1-ton chevy dually 4x4. its a nice truck and i helped do a frame off restore on it about 3 yrs. ago. it has a 350 with a 3sp tranny with granny gear. does anyone know what kind of tranny this is?? this thing is due for an engine build up and i was thinking about going with a 383 stroker because i'm to cheap for a big block for now. i should have some pics of it soon so i'll keep you guys posted on the build up!!

Congrats on the new truck! Sounds like you've got a haulin' machine there. Depending on how crazy you get with that 383, and how patient you are while searching, you might be able to do the big block for the same price or even less. Good luck with it either way!

congrats /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif if the tranny is a 3 speed + granny it is a sm465 if it is a 3 speed including granny its a sm420

hey thanks for the info. i think its a sm465. and about the motor, my engine guy said he could prob. build a 383 for around 3grand. is this price good or should i look else where?

Thats about right for a basic stroker build up. On the price that is.

that price is for a long bock motor, so i'm going to have to add my own carb, intake, and ignition. i want to put a good cam in it, maybe one of those comp extreme 4x4 cams. roller rockers are def. going in too. and for a carb, i was thinking about edelbrock's new thunder avs off road carbs. has anyone have any experience with these carbs?? i know their new and all but i'm pretty confident that thats the one i'm going to get.
