I was given an old paint gun and want to rebuild it. The gun is a devilbiss MBC with a binks pot on it. There are no model numbers on it, just "type MBC" on the handle. The only thing I can find is devilbiss MBC 510. Do you know if a rebuild kit for a MBC 510 will work with this gun?

I don't know anything about painting or paint equipment. I've heard this stuff is decent stuff, do you have any experience with them?

MBC's where devilbiss higher-end 2 piece body... I've painted eleventy hundred cars with one.. I own 2..

JGA's are the other more economy model that was out in those days.. it was a 1-piece and a bit more common.. the mbc's where more money...

kits are still readily available from any decent paint supplier.. tho they may need to be ordered.. being dinosaur tech these days...

the mbc's where always more of a siphon gun like yours is set up...... jga did that, but also worked very well in pressure pot set ups...

now, one important thing I'm leaving out here...

I fought the newer hvlp stuff as an oldschool guy.. loved my mbc's.. it's what I cleared hundreds of cars in the collision shop with...

BUT.. the old guns create a ton of overspray and waste a fair amount of material... and with the cost of paints to day, it's an issue that can't be ignored.. love my old stuff, just really can't afford to use em anymore!!! :doah: :haha:

on that note, I hate to say it, but a siphon mbc set up would make for a good primer gun these days if set up right.. you could also should shoot a single stage uro thru it easy enough...even clear.. basecoat, no fuggin way... :haha:

what # does it have on the aircap up front?

It's no. 45

I'm no painter, never done it, but I'd like to learn. The most I'd paint right now is the fiberglass top on my blazer. Maybe on day in the future I'll paint my blazer. For right now I'll probably only shoot primer and single stage paint.

that's a pretty big tip/needle/nozzle setup, but not the biggest.. but it'll dump some schtuff... :haha:

good for primer, or you could run single stage uro thru it... you'd just have to be aware that it's dumping some material and adjust your spraying technique a bit... clear would be tough, but conceivable with a bit of technique..

a nice thick primer would be a good learning process with that setup..

but you can tune these gun's by changing out the needle/nozzle and caps easy enough.. just a bit harder to hunt down the parts these days, but they are out there..

I actually have a needle/nozzle/cap setup for that gun to spray non-skid.. bedliner type products..

I sold quite a few of those Devilbiss guns back in the day--they were the "state of the art" back then...
Sharpe was about the only other brand that came close to them..

Ryoken is right though, today they are considered too wasteful to use, paint was about ten times cheaper when those guns ruled..still,they do a nice job ,once you get the hang of using one..

A lot of the old time body men I would wait on refused to try a gravity feed or HVLP gun when they first came out, saying "the old guns are the best--newfangled crap never works right,etc.."...but after a few of their younger employees started buying them and they saw how well even a novice could paint with them, and use less paint to boot,it wasn't long before they decided maybe they WERE better after all!..one guy said "maybe I wont have to buy a new compressor so often",he noticed his took a lot longer to come on when he used the HVLP gun compared to the old faithfuls.

Sharpe was always WAY more of a second fiddle to Binks and Devilbiss, kind of an imitator.. Binks was the rival to Devilbiss, neck and neck.. a Binks #7 is one of the most famous guns ever... I still run one for primer to this day...

Hell yeah,I forgot about Binks,we sold quite a few of those also...20 years takes a toll on the old brain cell's memories!....we sold a ton of the cheapie's that were clones of the Devilbiss and Sharpe's and others the tool catalogs had on "special" often to many back yard body men and ametuers, some body shops also bought them for primer guns..

Its pretty amazing how much has changed in the paint and equipments since I was working at those auto parts and body shop supply stores..back the,Dupont Centari and "Dulux" single stage was king,Imron was first choice for industrial uses ,and "Lucite" laquer could still be bought..as time went by they introduced basecoat clearcoat, and when I changed jobs and went to a place that sold R-M paints ,they started coming out with water based paints ,then Glasurit came along, after that I quit, and I'm sure many things since then have changed even more..

I was rather suprised to see a gallon of fast dry laquer thinner selling for 16 bucks the other day, when it was about 4-5 bucks when I last sold any!..and now laquer paint is outlawed, only some spray paint can be laquer here now!..you could get a gallon of white or black enamel for 15 bucks too,and paint a car for about 100-150 bucks for all the paint, reducer, primer, and sandpaper and a gallon of bondo...now a gallon of "cheap" bondo is 20+ bucks...I remember buying Tiger Hair for 8.99 a gallon, most of my old trucks needed 2 cans to plug all the rot holes so I could pass inspection!..
