Hey Tecton, regarding Poohbairs rollover....

Pshhhh sitting in a damn chair in front of a computer yelling at some other guy because he wants to be positive about a negative situation

Arguing about potential danger or accidents, go check your [darn] smoke alarms if you're that paranoid

“Oh no, my kid was at school playing on the plastic jungle gym while being encouraged by the teacher and he skinned his knee, ban jungle gyms and teachers and lock up the kids! The teacher didn’t even get fired!” Lock your kids in thier room untill thier old enough to breed more weak [darn] losers.

Controlled danger builds character, sit down and shut the [darn] up, buckle your seatbelt if applicable

BTW - Yeah,, tie down your junk Poohby, must have been a pain in the ass to pick up

Ok, I can’t keep my mouth shut anymore. I, as a father of two and a career Paramedic have to say a few things. One: If everyone took the precautions that Poohbairs has then I’d be out of a job. I guess if I had to chastise him for anything, it would be that the gear in the rear should have been secured better (judging by the pics) Two: If more parents had a good enough relationship with their kids to involve them in their free time, again, I may be out of a job. Three: If ANYONE said to my face my kids should be taken from me…. Lord knows, I hope you can run fast. That said, people have different ideas about what’s safe. The important thing is to mitigate the risks. I think his kids are far better off in a roll cage with their parents than home alone…anytime!

Thats the best thing i have heard all night.

Yup. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Two lessons learned today. One tie stuff down (judging by the pics as stated above) Two some people have different opinions about safety.

That said rant mode on:
If pure safety was the concern nobody would have kids. Child birth itself is one of the more dangerous events in life (even with modern medicine) to both the mother and the child. In the thinking of take them away no parent deserves children due to the numerous dangers lurking such as drugs, accidents, illness and that is just a quick shot. I believe he had every right to be where he was, luck found the RR tire in a hole and slowly tossed a caged offroad truck on its side in sand. That is probably one of the safest ways to flop I have seen. I have seen way to many kids without carseats to worry about a fellow safe wheeler doing his hobby with his family in the attempts to create future providing members of society (aka his children)
Rant mode off:

Get your .02 before this post is locked up to.

PS say that to me on the trail and I hope you can run faster scared than I can mad.

[/ QUOTE ] i so agree I have been looking at all these posts and i dont think he was excited to roll with his kids in there i was in a few rigs that rolled when i was a kid and look all it did was get me even more into it, I think that he takes his kids out with him and goes out on family outing is so cool. I hope that if I ever settle down and have a family I will be able to do the same.

Good point about the gear in the rear. Statistically speaking, I guess one could say that Bear's kids are actually safer in his full size, GM K5, fully caged truck wheelin in the woods, than they would be in a Hyundai going down a crowded freeway at 65 MPH.

I should probably keep my mouth shut but here goes.

If I recall correctly, Poohbair's cage was the first thing he had ever built out of metal -- and it was built out of "nascar" tubing. I am very glad that it did its job and protected his kids.

I am definately not skilled enough as a weldor to make a cage to protect my family yet.

I am glad that everyone is okay. I don't think anyone should have their kids taken away for going on a family outing -- even if some danger is involved (ever seen a family rock climbing?)

I do think that Poohbair's post might have given the wrong impression. I think he was pleased that the cage worked, and that everyone was okay. I don't think he was stoked that he had just rolled a truck with his kids in it.

[/ QUOTE ]

The more I read all the replies and think about it, I put myself in Poohbairs place at the time of the rollover and when he made the original thread that got locked. I can sum it up in two different variations:

1. He was excited about the rollover because he was able to "test" his cage and finally have proof the cage works, hence the whole idea of building one in the first place. I believe his whole concept was to be happy it works and no one got hurt.

2. The gear falling out of the truck can happen to anyone. How many of you guys strap down your gear knowing you're gonna be in a rollover? Probably not many of you. It was purely an error in judgment part on Pooh. The lesson he learned today will never happen again with the junk falling out of the rig. Afterall, no one wants to pick up their trash twice, do they? /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

And like the others have said, no one should be making comments of their kids being removed from the family, etc. Thats just wrong. But apologies were made and said, so life goes on. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

LET ME SAY THIS, NO ALCOHOL INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First off, lets clear a few things up... Was I STOKED to roll my baby... not really. I could have sat around an been mad and cussed and ranted and raved, or I could look at the positive side... I got to do something that I hadn't done before and nobody got hurt, at all, not even a scratch... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Facts of the matter are this; With the type of wheelin' that I do a rollover is just going to happen... it is not a matter of "IF" it is a matter of "WHEN" , hence the cage... Me and a few of my close buddies and wheeling partners (one is White-Rhyno) have always wondered who would roll our rigs first (unintentionally)...turns out I WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Secondly, if I knew that the truck was going to roll (as if any of us ever KNOW that the truck is going to roll) the kids would have gotten out.
Thirdly, my kids were in the back seat w/ a full cage, in car seats w/ 5 pt harnesses and they didn't even budge. The worst that happen was my 3 yr old had a SOFT fold up style cooler sitting on the roof by his face, and he wasn't real fond of that.
As for the stuff scattered around, that is a little deceiving because the pics were taken after we started dragging stuff around. All of that stuff was in the back in a large Rubbermaid storage bin w/ a lid w/ latches. Turns out Rubbermaid didn't intend for these "latches" to hold the weight of all that stuff, so the lid popped off after the truck was rolled.
Oh, and for the speed factor that some people brought up, the truck was actually at a dead stop before it rolled, so next time you are sitting in a non-moving vehicle, BE CAREFUL!! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Thanks everybody for your concern, except for Tecton... I don't need his approval, blessing, permission, or anything else to spend quality time w/ my family. As for bryguy00b, thanks for the appology, at least your man enough to say that you were out of place!

I read the thread and I was quite shocked at the response.

Poohbair,

I don't quite understand your happy feeling about rolling your rig, but congrats if thats how you feel. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Me personally, it absolutely scared the sh*t out of me when I rolled mine, and with any luck I'll never have that happen again.

I have come to accept it as part of this sport though, and your attitude is good in the sense that you just have to deal with it, put it back rubber side down and drive on with wheelin' it.

I, like you, enjoy fourwheeling enough that this is a risk I'm willing to take, although I can't say it isn't one that is very scary in my opinion, and depending on the violence of the rollover can really cause serious injury and that's why I am quite scared of ever becoming involved in a more violent rollover.

That said, I'm glad nobody was hurt, and glad you got to have a good time this weekend. That's all that really matters. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

i can just see those pictures with the caption "Quality Family Fun"

All I can say is you must make good roll cages /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I hope your truck isnt too hard to fix, and I'm glad everyone is ok.

Tecton, do you have any kids... or any family for that matter /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif? If you do, what do you consider a good family event? Possibly an exciting night of Scrabble, or hey kids, maybe we can all sit around and watch Friends...WON'T THAT BE FUN!!!

i sure as [darn] dont consider a car wreck bringing the family together

i am glad you had fun and even though the truck got beat up
alittle, you built it strong enough to protect your family.
and i am glad all is well. i hope your kids even though scared at the time , they will keep on wanting to go wheeling with you.
my son wheels with me all the time, but i think if i rolled
the truck , his mom wouldnt ever let me take him again. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
she would probably take me to court and say i am an unfit
father /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. . /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
hhmm , theres another reason i divorced her , /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

So you don't take your kids with you (if you have some) on car rides then I suppose? Because any minute some drunk driver could run you off the road and you would have a wreck. I still don't understand how you think he did all this on purpose... Or at least that is how you are coming off on all of this.

... if the rollover was someone like Fox or Watson,...

Just for the record, Fox's son Zach was NOT riding in the truck when Steve did his thing at the Rockpile in Moab last fall.
Zach learned a few new words, though /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know, this is a good topic and it made me think about a few things.

First of all, I'm building my new S-TON with my kids completely in mind. I thought about this extensively. I even went so far as to purchase an Extended Cab version just so the boys can sit in the back and enjoy a day with Dad. My S10 will have a complete interior cage as well as an exterior roll bar near the back of the cab. This is all designed for safety of all passengers in my vehicle. I'll provide roll bar padding and make sure the kids stay in their 5 pt harnesses.

Any of you that think we shouldn't involve our kids in our sport are absolutely asinine. When I read the post - I thought well, the old' boy might be a bit redneck (don't worry, Im a certified redneck) for saying it the way he did, but I think the way he talked about it he meant to boast the fact that he built something that did its job. Thats exactly what a cage is for. They are not for looks, not for bling, they are all about saving your noggin. They are not there to protect your rig per-say. Its not like people stand around all bruised up from bouncing their head off a piece of 1.75" steel and say "well, at least it saved the sheetmetal".

Back on topic. I have one fellow K5er who doesn't have a cage and drives 4+ trails with kid in a child seat!!! Doesn't mean he's a bad Dad - to me it shows hes patient enough to take his youngin' out and still have fun. Lets not turn this into a "if you have kids, you gotta have a cage" post.

I think alot of the comments look like inexperienced people just poking their finger at someone and issuing blame. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Hey, I certainly don't agree with Tecton's response, or with the comments about having your kids taken away. BUT: you are implying above that he (or anyone) would be a pussy for NOT taking their kids.

You taking your kids was your choice, and it doesn't make you a "moron". I choose not to take my kid (she is only 3 mo. old) and probably won't take her until she is MUCH older. I just took the first kid wheeling (my godson) at 7 years old, which I was comfortable with. Again: MY CHOICE.

So just because he jumped your ass about it don't imply people with a little more caution are wrong either.

The point is you chose to take them, you also chose to take reasonable precations for their safety, an accident occurred, and everyone's fine.

I am glad everyone is OK, and you must have the COOLEST WIFE on the planet.

Besides, at this point I'm glad my family can't go with, I can't stand the wife bitching about my highway driving as it is. It's even worse off road. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
