I have done something very similar to this "in the tailgate" idea, although our K5's obviously have too much in the tailgate to put it there. My K5 had the factory vinyl covered cardboard interior walls in place when I got it. It always pissed me off that there was about 3-1/2" of space behind there that got wasted. So I made new walls out of 3/4" plywood by tracing the originals onto the wood and cutting it out with the RotoZIP. Drilled holes where the old ones were. Then I laid my jack on top of it (making sure to clear the little sheetmetal standoffs that hold the middle out on the interior walls) and traced around. I have the 60" Hi-Lift by the way. I cut this out with my RotoZIP again, and made steel brackets that bolted to the back of it with a 1/2" bolt in the middle. It's basically the exact same thing but in the interior wall of my K5, safe and sound. It's held in by 1/2" wingnuts and fits perfectly. Want to see pictures, I could get some?

The oribinal post looks ok, but would not be functional at all IMO on a blazer/burb b/c of the rear window. Pluss it looks like you would spend a ton of time getting that right when most people just mount them to the floor/bumper/rack which takes about 10 minutes.

what? It is on a blazer....?

The shovel and axe are on the other side, only there is just a cutout for the head of the shovel to dip inside the wall. :D

No, it just wouldn't work on a K5 because our tailgates are not hollow (rear window glass, regulator, etc.).
ok, I thought he was talking about where I put mine.... I understand that it wouldnt work inside the tailgate...... :doah: stupid me

I think it would be plenty practical so long as the tailgate opens, and it doesn't open up the tailgate interior to dust/dirt/contaminants. It's taking something that would have had to mount elsewhere and mounting it in space that would otherwise be completely wasted. Good idea in my book. I hate bling though.

Anybody I've had riding in the back has been impressed that it is not in the way.

Mine is mounted to my toolbox. You can see it in this picture but it is upside down from how I usually stow it. That way I can reach the latches on the box.

How bout some pics of what you described, sounds pretty good to me. I have a reserve tank on the pass. side, so I can't mount anything there, but it would be nice to have the jack, shovel etc, right across from my reserve.

I'm working on it, I just got home from Army and it's dark. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow morning.
