Hi Steer Fail - Fixed That Quick!

I tried to install my new hi steer tie rod and it hits my drag link (at rest, tires straight). :angry1: I know why, the axle is moved forward 2" (52's) so the drag link has a rearward sweep to it. WTF do I do with this pile? :doah: :dunno:

My reason for wanting hi steer stems from the front D70 gear conversion - ring gear sticks out too far for my HD diff cover (cover hits ring gear 1/4" before cover touches housing), stock cover will fit with rock ring but the 1.5" tie rod hits when turned.

I could buy / return HD covers from companies until I find one that fits but I don't feel like blowing a crapload of freight $$ doing that.

Move the steering box forward? My fab skills STINK but I guess Kert could make something. :dunno:

Go back to low steer with the stock cover and hope I never hit anything?

You're using the drop in the dragling wrong. Its not designed to have the drop straight up and down, its design to pitch the draglink to clear the engine crossmember and line up the axle properly.

I had the same issue. A short phone call and explanation and it all fit and that was with my axle pushed 1.5" forward.

GTFO! Seriously?!? I always thought the bend was to offset lift? :yikes:
 
I did it and that fixed it, tons of room with the bend horizontal. I always thought having the bend any way other than dropping straight down, to compensate for lift, was wrong.

So simple it's embarrassing.... Thank you Stomis, you have made my week! :bow: :thumb:

I wonder how many people have the bent drag link going up and down and don't even know why. Mine is up/down. Nothing makes contact under there but they do come close. Be changing that shortly :doah:
 
Good call Vinnie! I installed mine how it is in the OP, but no high steer and it clears everything else fine. Good note that ive not ever really noticed before :thumb:

I just find it hilarious how we all just look at it and assume. I did the exact same thing and said "Wtf they told me this would clear with the axle forward" A phone call and 15mins later everything was vonderbar.
 
It's best to just remember that as far as the geometry is concerned a bent link acts just like a slightly shorter straight link. Set it however you need to make everything clear and you're off to the races. A bent link is slightly weaker than straight but it'll work just fine in a steering linkage.
 
It was purely an assumption but I always thought the bend should be vertical to keep the drag link as horizontally flat as poosible. Live and learn.
 
The bend is there for clearance. Could be up down, could be front to back. Nice think about up down is it takes angle off of the ends at ride height. Front to back on the bend isn't going to help you that way.

Most will probably still use the bend up and down.
