So I did some measuring this afternoon and it looks like I only have 5 1/4" of travel on the tie rod. Does that sound right? I was expecting roughly 6".

I measured by turning to lock, marking the tie rod, turning to the opposite lock and marking again. The distance between the 2 marks is 5 1/4". Did I do it right?

Interested also

I know I needed an 8" ram for my regular steer, but it also seems the knuckles have a longer arm than the highsteer arms. If I'm thinking right, that would make a big difference.

I destroked my 8" cylinder by 1" to get 7" of usable stroke on my WFO reverse high steer arms. Now, the guys at WFO say that you should only need about 6.75" of stroke lock to lock using their arms.

Sounds short to me.

Is this high steer?
Did you check steering stops? Are they excessively long? stock adjustment?

Are these the arms I reworked for you?

Yeah, these are the arms you reworked. The drag link hole is the typical 7.25~7.50" (can't remember right now) from center and the tie rod holes are spaced just enough so the TRE's don't hit so the arm holes seem to be located correctly.

My steering stops are untouched, unbent stockers.

My measurement seemed short to me too but I don't know how else to check it. Does my description in the first post sound like I checked it correctly?

Yeah. I rigged up a pointer using a magnetic dial indicator base, I turned to lock, marked the tie Rod then turned to the opposite lock and measured the difference. :dunno:

That is how I did it. It shouldn't be that complicated. The ram needs to track one to one the tie rod. I centered my ram and exact middle stroke at steering neutral so left and right would be equal. You want your steering to be limited by the constraints of the steering components not the travel of the ram so going a bit longer on the ram and limiting it is what worked for me. 8 inches or 4 each way is what I needed
