The oil pan on the 454 I'm swapping into the crew cab got a good size dent in it when the donor truck got blown off the jack stands. I can probably hammer the dent out, but I'm never one to pass up an excuse to upgrade. I was thinking about putting in a larger oil pan.

Milodon lists a 7qt oil pan (truck pan is 6qt factory) that looks intriguing. They have it listed under "Off Road Truck Oil Pans". http://www.milodon.com/oil-pans/off-road-oil-pans-chevy.asp

I'm a little concerned if a deeper pan, 3/4" to be precise, would cause any clearance issues. Looking at the images, it seems like that Milodon pan would actually have more clearance for the engine cross member than the factory truck pan does.

I am curious on thoughts/experiences with using a larger oil pan.

Oh and one other nit-picky thing I don't like about the stock pan. I don't like the drain plug being right there on the bottom of the pan. I prefer the style like my 350 that has it down along the bottom edge.

On my old K10 I had a deep Canton pan with a boxy pick up specifically for it, good quality stuff. The pan had a spring loaded vertical door in the sump to allow fluid transfer front to back but not back to front.

I don't think the Milodon has the trap doors. I was reading about those and they sound nifty for off road use.

I used one off a 427 tall deck. Not sure how much bigger but it is, and fits in the chassis fine. Close to the crossmember, but fits. Also uses stock pick up....

Not sure which pan I have but it was really close to the factory crossemember. In fact it rubbed with worn engine mounts.

@mrk5 don't you have an ORD crossmember? Are you going to swap that out for the BBC ORD crossmember? Let me know if you need any pics of mine for clearance concerns....

Some of the specs listed on aftermarket oil pans are what is termed as "out to lunch". I bought a larger capacity aftermarket pan for my small block Chevy, and the specs said that it was about 3/4" deeper than my stock pan. When I got the pan, and measured the depth, it was exactly the same depth as my stock pan. All of the increase in oil capacity was in the forward area of the pan, and not in the sump area at all. I would not be surprised if you check the specs for this same pan on several different web-sites, and found that they where different on each web-site.

I do and it's actually a big block version I got for free from a guy that didn't need it anymore. However I'm going to redo the mount brackets and crossmember. I have the 4wd engine mount brackets from the donor K30 and I plan to fab a crossmember to get some more clearance for the high-steer and assist ram.

So really crossmember clearance isn't too much concern other than being counter productive to what I want to gain on the high-steer clearance.

My .02 hammer out the dent buy something more beneficial like an oil cooler.
Now you've given me something else to think about spending money on regardless of what I do with the oil pan..... :doah:

The Milodon pan mentioned in the first post is what I have on mine. Only thing I had to do was the taller pickup.

Did the pickup work with the factory pump or did you swap out the pump too?

I think it's a Melling high volume pump. It was from the last build and moved over to the new engine. Pretty certain it's not factory. Not sure why Milodon says the pump should matter.
