Hi, My name is Nick. This is a little experiment i'm trying in hope it works, and to also prove my co-workers wrong. Anywho onto my "Not-so-Sob story". I am a full time Mechanic working 60 hours a week trying to make it trough life. I own a 1982 K5 Blazer, my Pride and Joy. This truck literally is my life it has always been my trusty steed when i needed her. She is a very nice Truck. And I take very good care of her. Well as are most of us, I am in a tight spot right now in life between Bills, Rent, Food and really just life. My Truck has recently started running really horribly and to get her fixed basically she will need a full rebuild on the engine, as she is over 30 years old and smokes a whole lot, lacks power now, and she needs a heart transplant. I have two options. Both will cost $3,000+/- a few dollars to get her going again! My options are
A. Buy a 305 crate engine off summit racing for $3000 plus shipping. or
B. Buy a 5.3 liter Vortec out of a new 2003 Chevy Truck/SUV.
I am going with option B, For a couple reasons, More power, Much more Environmentally safe as it runs much cleaner, and did i say it will have tons more power.
I can complete this project with $3,000

If this is not the Correct place for this post, please feel free and take it down.

All I am asking is that you donate whatever amount you have to spare. This money will go straight to the Truck fund, and nothing else, I am not a Druggie, I am not an Alcoholic. I am an Average American trying to make the most out of life. And I am in a spot where I need a little help.
So whatever you can do, Even if it is 1 simple dollar That gets me that much closer to getting my Pride and Joy back on the road!
For any donations please Paypal them to [email protected]
If you have any questions or would like an update or if you would like to introduce yourself feel free to email me at the same Email or shoot me a pm

get the 260hp 350 from jegs for $1495...... cheaper yet

edit: I didn't read the donate part.... cant help there

If you are a mechanic, why would you not just rebuild what you have since money is tight? $300-400 will buy all the parts to make it last a little longer.

IMO, you have many more options available (for less money).

Wonder what shipping is like. When I got my gm performance plus 290hp 350, just went to the chevy dealer :dunno: $2400.

Or CL or JY another 305/350 whatever you have for a couple hundred bucks. It'll last till you can save for your dream engine. Then sell your bad block back for a few bucks.

I vote junkyard motor and rebuild your motor in the mean time. Most I've seen someone charged fora running 350 is $500

Got my junkyard motor for $400 runs great! Old one is siting on a stand waiting to get rebuilt.

I'm wondering if recent issues has caused a misinterpretation of how and when the brotherhood helps one another monetarily.

I'm not quite sure how to take this thread. In times of crisis, and I can attest to this, the brotherhood comes together in amazing ways to help out a friend. That said, I'm not sure how much support you're gonna get on this one. Too much doesn't add up for me..... A request for $$ from a non-supporting member with a really low post count? Full-time mechanic, who should have the skills, but doesn't want to rebuild what he's got? And has decided he wants one of the more "expensive" crate engine swaps because of the potential power?

We've all fallen on tough times at one point or another. Heck, my rig been on jack stands for the better part of 4 years now because of what I want to do, but don't have the funds available. You make do with what you can. The luxury items wait until you can afford them.

Agree on this one.

OP, there are options available if you're trying to get your ride back on the road...small loans are still available thru your local credit union/bank, for interest rates that are decent. Not great, but cheaper than buying a new car just to get the $$ for a motor to get you going again.

In the interim I would go with a JY motor, which will buy you some time to figure out what you wanna do.

Good luck.

This thread makes me laugh. Non supporting out of the woodworks member asking us to fund his truck build. I'm a nice guy and will donate to just about any good cause but really?
You're a mechanic, it's a small block chevy. Go find one for a couple hundred bucks used and slap it in.

yeah, asking for money in this manner has suspicious written all over it...

besides, your email address is camaro84... why not just drive the camaro?..

This thread is fishy.........

He is a mechanic, but doesn't say what is actually wrong with his current engine. I could tell you that I had coolant show up in a single cylinder of my 5.7 tbi in my 88 k5. I suspected a head gasket, but it smoked from burning oil and had over 150k on it. For $1700+ free shipping I got a GM Goodwrench engine from summit racing. I needed to power the truck cheap and reliably.

I can understand if he doesn't want to or doesn't know hot to rebuild and engine. I wouldn't even try it. I'm sure I could learn, but why take the chance when there are inexpensive and reliable options out there? I also would not use a junk yard or used engine, unless I saw it run or drove it and the price was a steal. For $1700 bucks I got a 3 year 100k warranty, and a little assurance that the factory is most likely trying to make sure they don't come back from warranty issues. I wouldn't trust a used engine.

Why put a POS 305 back in it when 350's are so popular? It is not an electronically controlled engine, AFAIK.

I considered the 5.3 swap, but even on a non daily driver, I didn't want to go through the expense, time involved, and smog issues. I am glad I got my K5 going because the 406 for my 79 C20 daily driver is getting rebuilt now, and the rebuilt Th400 is also waiting to go back in.

Maybe I should have hit up the brotherhood to help with the $4-5k cost of my rebuilds. A cool grand of that is due to the roller cam and rocker upgrade. You guys will help with that.........Right?

OP, if you story is true, good luck with getting your DD going again. Just throw an inexpensive rebuild or a stock new crate engine in there if that one needs major work. If it is something like a head gasket, you likely know how to do that pretty well. These trucks are simple to work on compared to new stuff that you would see in the shop everyday. My uncle owns a shop and I sometimes hang out and check out what kind of work they are doing.

If it still runs, save up money and keep driving it. My K5 leaked and burned oil when I got it. It took 6 years and 6-7k miles to finally kill the engine. I sort of beat on it too, because I hated how crappy it ran. Unfortunately it died when I last had the engine out of my pickup, so then I was up **** creek without a paddle. Luckily my grandfather had an extra truck to loan me.

Like others said, you probably won't get many donations with that story, and that email address. Most of us are probably not professional wrench turners, and we manage to keep our trucks on the road. I would think that a professional mechanic may have some contacts, friends, known engine shops, etc. that might be able to give you a hand or steer you in the right direction.

This might explain some of the problems. Heck I admit I can not do much mechanical work due to being handicapped. I have the knowledge but not the body. If you don't know there are guys who would help and teach you for a few beers. I live on my disability check and as others have said we do a little at a time.

I am keeping the Catalytic converter, actually putting a new one on. I work at an Exhaust shop and all i have right now is my y-pipe. .

I have a1982 Blazer K5 with a three speed. I was being an idiot and did a burn out, i broke the piece that bolts to the cross member and is between the Tranny and X-fer case(looks sorta like a bellhousing), not too many 3 speed blazers in the Yard.

I wish you luck bud I have a strong 305 in an 87 blazer with 109,000 miles and am only asking $2499 for the whole truck. I know in Grand Junction a 350 TBI runs for $500

Sorry my money is tied up in Nigeria trying to get my lump sum that the government is holding for me.

Hi I'm Adam. Can I has money?
No, can onlyz spare cheezburger.

OP, CL a used motor. Find someone parting their rig, hear it fire up. If you're satisfied I bet you could get the entire turnkey motor for a couple hundred. SBC are a dime a dozen and cheap.

Hey now guys, it's one thing to let him know we don't condone begging for money, don't gotta beat the guy up.

To the OP, we help each other out when there's a true need for it. This is also more for long term members, I would saying for us paying members, but with a lot of us memberships can go on pause for a while if something IRL is going on, so I wouldn't even say that specifically.

When donations are made, it's usually another member getting something together, not the one needing help asking for it. It's also for real world uncontrollable bad situations. Needing vehicle help isn't really one of them.

If you don't have a few hundred bucks for a used motor, that's the time to ask a friend/family members, payday loan (even though those suck) or similar. Pawn something. I've sold a few rigs I've really liked to pay the bills that I really really wished I still had. Life happens. I'm on K5 #4 or 5
