i had a engine shop bore my1974 350 .040 deck and line hone, then took it home and assembled... keithblack domed pistons, chevy x rods ,crane 535 lift solid cam, melling high volume oil pump, bowtie heads, 2.055 stainless valves, comp valve springs, valve guides, titanium retainers, 1.7 comp roller rockers, all arp bolts, rpm airgap intake, holley fuel pump, plus a pile of stuff i missed...and the holley750 dp, broke it in on a stand with old headers, then changed the valve springs and ran it again....put it in the truck and did a lil adjusting, pulled the plugs and all is good...but it surges, runs at 750-800 and in a bit goes to 1100 and then slowly back...no vac leaks , i cant figure it out...besides that its an animal......any ideas????

what rpm is that cam for? i had a crane 246/500 lift cam that if you didnt have it idle atleast 950 it would actually foul out plugs. may just be the cam or might need some fine tuning on the carb.

First off, the carb is too big for a 350. As someone else said depending on the duration of the cam @ .050" it's doubtful that it will like to idle at anything under 1000 rpm's. What is the deck height, compression ratio, cylinder head CC's? What head gasket are you running? Are you sure about the rockers being 1.7 ratio?

ok here goes..

the rockers are 1.7 for sure, the head gaskets make up for the .010 shaved off the top, i bought them from the engine shop, he suggested them, the carb is what the engine guy suggested.he said because of the trucks size and weight...i have no idea. the cam is small compared to alot of peoples and it is on the paperwork to ide from 700-1000 so maybe i gota turn it up a lil... compression ratio is 12:1......i usually run all vp red fuel in it and it runs great, i check the plugs and they are almost perfect, and for the oil its super clean and doesnt smell like fuel.......i shouldnt say it but i had old 38s and i could go like 20mph and stand on it and keep shifting and burning em until i left off...lol....the motor is ridiculous...with that kit the heads, intake and carb it supposed to be 450-475 hp...but im not sure..
