i had a holley 4150 rebuilt by a shop using the parts from a truck avenger. i saw it bench tested and it seemed fine. i had a freshly rebuilt 350 dropped in and had that shop put the carb on. they said it wasnt set right, messed with the floats, then threw an edlebrock on it (with an extra charge of course). is there a proper way to set the floats without taking it apart? i'm not a carb guy but i know the basics and see the adjustments on the top of the carb.

Its been so long , but I remember taking the top off the Edelbrocks and adjusting the float .

If they would of left the Holley on there you could adjust the float with a screwdriver and a wrench .

i want to put the holley back on, since the edlebrock can't handle an angle without stalling. so adjusting the floats on the holley...how do i go about that? i see how to...just don't know if there is a standard way and then some fine tuning

Im not sure on that model. But on the street avenger carb you simply take the top caps off the float bowls they are small, like 1/2" nut driver caps(no need to remove bowls) and there is a bolt and setbolt inside, you loosen one and then turn the other one (not sure which way) but and then you just tighten set bolt and put cap back on. I did this and put the bar vent thing up top (street avenger didnt have it) and those things fixed my angle problem

With the engine running, take the little screws out of the side of the bowl. These are your sight holes. Put a wrench over the nut on the top of the bowl (5/8" if memory serves) and a large flat blade screw driver in the slot on the screw. Loosen the screw and rotate the nut. CW will raise the float level and CCW will lower it. Most of the time you want the fuel to come up to the bottom of the sight holes and not run out.

For offroading, you may want to lower the float some and put a step larger jet in. Personally, I've never seen any carb work offroad like a Q-Jet will. I've seen a few holleys and one or two edelbrocks. They all cough black smoke when they go over speed bumps.

BTW, does the holley have center hung floats or side hung floats?

If your carb has float bowls that look like this then follow the photo.

The above is the correct way. I don't rejet but I have at truck avenger and the K30 has qjet. At extreme angles they will both bog out but the qjet is better

Be aware that while the engine is running you have fuel pressure up to those needles/seat. Loosen the screw very little, and be prepared for a possible fuel seepage, or if you loosen too much it will spray fuel out around that screw. Just turn them a small enough amount to be able to move the nut without damaging the gasket under it.

yeah my carb is similar to the picture, thanks that's a big help. and it's got center hung floats. truth be told i set out looking for a q-jet, but the carb shop talked me into the holley. until i get a cage and some lockers, ill keep my wheeling to moderate hills and angles. the edelbrock on it now is so touchy offroad.

i was gunho about the TA carb... so i got one... put it on.. and drove it... adjusted the floats... did all kinds of stuff but had that dreaded stumble...WOT it was fine though..

i couldnt get my timing right.. ajust with a timing light and the truck idled at 2800rpms...so turned the dist to get it down to 700.... drove that way for 2 years...
to find out there was a high idle screw i didnt know about... so that fixed my timing issue.. then i had an issue with the choke sticking.... i tested the voltage to the choke and got 4v from a 12v source.. so i took the fuse block apart.... flipped out at the ratsnets... ripped it all out and that is where i sit...

im still gonna say the truck avenger carb is good.... i put a jet kit in.. .35 i believe.. and changed the accelerator pump cam (forget which one i used.. pink i think) but search here for me and truck avenger and you may find my threads....

once i get my truck wired back together ill give the TA another try..... i didnt really angle it much but it didnt stall or hesitate at all when i drove it around...
but once running and back on the road (hopefully in 3 months)... i will take her out on purpose and angle the fajesus out of it....
