holley carb?

i got a holley carb from a friend for free, dont know what size it is anyway i put on my stock 400 motor, it would smoke realy bad and smell like gas . is it to big of a carb, and giving it to much gas? if i put a inline fuel regulator on it and start at the lowest setting do you think it would work or do i have a diffrent problem? thanks.

If you got a stock 400, a 750 or smaller should be good, Vac secondary for the street.
