I have a buddy that has a blacksmith shop, so I was going to make my own bead locks. What thickness of steel should I use? Also, I saw in MunePit's build thread that his bead locks were tapered. Is that normal, or will flat steel work fine? Anything else I need to know?

most are 1/4 in thick

If they are tapered like that it is called coning. i suggest making anti coning rings. basically when you tighten down the beadlock it hits the bead and stops, and then over time with em tight it pulls in the inside edge making them bent in.

you dont "need" anti cone rings, but i think it is a good idea. i know of some using a v belt the right size as a ring , or you can make the steel counterpart.

No one else has any input on this? I bought one set for a 16.5" wheel from Kert. Going to look at it. It might be simpler just to buy the other three instead of having so much wasted steel.

I bought my diy rings from a local guy for pretty cheap and did the anti-coning just like the pic that Chris posted... I bought the flat stock for the anti-coning from Home Depot for around $3.50 per wheel... Gonna do the same thing for my son's diy beadlocks he just got...

There's a couple/few guys up here that have small plasma tables and sell them on craigslist...

Wish I would have done anti coning rings. Mine deflect about an eighth of an inch, which from what I have seen isn't much at all.

After taking apart a buddies set of beadlocks that had coned, I decided that mine had to have anti-coning rings... All the hardware was sitting at an angle and made it really hard to take apart and he had to get all new hardware when they were put back together...

It was well worth the $15 and a little extra time when building them...

V belts are the best anti coning ring out there.

Which way do you put the V? The smaller diameter to the inside of the wheel?

Can you make the hole big enough we can still use a hub cap?

Idk 10" is a guess. Marty is hoping to use them on the wheels he has. I may consider them too if I can find a set to the saftey bead 16.5s he has.

They may be closer to 12". The a$$ hole made me carry his hubcaps at the swap meet while he shorted though licence plate to full fill his goal of 1 for each nebraska county.

I'd bet it could work on 16.5's probably 16's but the 15's would be cutting it close. I'd have to check to be sure though.

The 15" hub caps are considerably smaller than the 3/4 ton hub caps. My set of rings showed up today (yesterday...)
