Home made shackle flips

This is a much stronger method IMHO than cutting the bottom out of your existing shackle hanger. Micah and I both used this method and it was easy to do and cheap, as in less than $10 bucks for the hangers and hardware in my case. The hanger is the front rear spring hanger from a 3/4 ton truck. It takes a little time with a tape measure to get the hanger in the right place and you will need to build a brace off the back side to the frame rail with angle iron. As you can see, Micah has yet to install his brace /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

For everybody worried about the strength of cutting out the bottom of the stock hanger: Take a look at the amount of steel in the shackle itself. Much smaller.

I'm not saying it is not strong enough to work. I have seen guys running them that way with light to moderate wheeling. Although I think a hard hit, absorbed by the hanger with the hole in it, coming off a ledge may bend/break it off. I am just saying that it's better to be safe than sorry. Spare 'cut' spring hangers are not common in most peoples trail box.

Another thought as to why I don't like the hole through the bottom method is the fact that you may limit shackle angles.

Thanks for getting the measurements, and the other flip that uses the 3/4 ton hanger is a good idea, i am just tring to stay away from droping the gas tank to put on a shackle flip. Thanks for the help, and if any one elxe has some cool ideas i am open for opinions. Thanks again.
Cory..

you dont have to drop the gas tank to put one in all you have to do is use a magnet like the one that is on the end of the antenna looking thing. I just makes it easier to remove the gas tank. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Oh thats cool, i thought i read somewhere that u had to drop the gas tank to do a shackle flip like the ord, or the one pictured above.

if you feel like chiseling rivits you could probably leave the tank in place. im not a fan of grinding or torching that close to a tank. is your tank in good condition, if not this may be an excuse to buy a replacment.

Here is the shot from the rear. You can see how it is vee shaped and cradles the stock mount. The sleeve is to strengthen the top ears of bracket and support bolt. I don't see why no one makes these in their own garage, I would if I had more tools .

BTW ignore my tire and axle sticking out, locker is out still as I was sent wrong thrust washers . I hate reordering.

I didn't drop my gas tank to install my hanger. Its not that hard to get some bolts back there in my case... but i guess no bumpers and a 2 inch body lift helped a bit /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

as for the strength, there is no way anyone is going to convince me that you could wheel as hard on a stock hanger that had the top cut out as you could with a hanger such as i used. granted i have yet to brace them, but i'm sure they're still stronger than some of the cut hanger's i've seen. /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif

How many of yall had to re-route your exhaust?? I looked at mine and it goes right under the stock hanger.
