Hey fellas, well I got my MSD Atomic TBI in and it fired right up and ran pretty well, so I went to go for a test drive around the neighborhood. I wanted to monitor the AFR but the wiring for the hand held screen isn’t long enough to reach in the cab, so I pinned it under the wiper. For fear of pinching the wiring I just closed the hood to the first latch. As I got up to speed (about 25-30mph) the hood opened and I slammed on the brakes, it flung open hard enough to shoot the hood springs off the hinges and into road, but thankfully I think slamming on the brakes prevented the hood from hitting the windshield.
I reinstalled the springs and When I went to close the hood, the back of the hood hit the wiper arm hard enough to break the plastic head of the wiper body.. I then realized the hood had bent the metal wiper arm and was
Pushing the metal arm into the windshield when I tried to close the hood.
I checked the hood side of the hinges and didn’t see any obvious scuffs or scratches indicating the hood slid on the hinge, same thing on the fender side of the hinges.
The hood does not appear to be warped or bent, the only thing I can think of is the hinge it’s self is tweaked? There’s nothing obviously wrong with the hinges, I was able to get it closed enough to drive home by pulling up and forward on the back of the hood while also pushing the front of the hood down..
Any thoughts or things to check?

Assuming that nothing slipped under the bolts then I've got to imagine the hinges are bent. You may be able to loosen the bolts and adjust things to compensate for it. I'd be shocked if it didn't actually slip out of alignment though.

The hood is hitting the passenger(right side) wiper arm.. I tried loosening the hood bolts and pulling the hood forward, the right side was all the way forward, left side wasn’t so I pulled it forward and tightened it down, it didn’t help but then the hood was to far forward on the drivers side when I eventually closed it..

I have extra hinges in Sultan. But you need to look for what you bent. It could be in the hinge or in the hinge mounting points of the inner fenders.

Here’s the link to new hinges at JEGS.
I think the springs are available too.
Under $100 for hinges and springs. Not to shabby

Ok yeah that’s not too bad at all
Man you got off easy. That can be devastating.
Agreed. Thankfully I wasn’t going faster, or on a busy road. Lesson learned about latching the hood all the way, Ill buy an extender for the handheld.
I don’t have any right now, I’ll see if I have time tomorrow

Thanks Kenny, I’ll drop you note if I’m in the area. There’s nothing obvious to the eye, but I’m sure it could be slightly tweaked and without a known good hinge side by side to compare it with, it might be hard to tell.. how would I check the inner fender mounting points? If I remove them will the inner fender be bent or something?

Thanks for all of the replies!

Ok I tried to show in these pics, with the hood almost closed how far forward it is, then with it about 30% open it’s hitting the windshield. You can see the slots on the hood side of the hinge are all the way forward, then a few pics of the hinge. I ordered new hinges should be here next week..

It seems like all your issues are the lack of springs on the hinge assemblies right now. Nothing looks bent or ruined...

As you raise and lower the hood do both hinges move exactly the same?

I’m guessing no springs because of the cowl hood (fiberglass or just being careful)?

I don’t see anything obvious hinge to hinge operating different or looking different. I just pulled the spring off for the picture, it hit the window with it on or off, it’s so damn heavy it’s hard tell if it was better or worse with vs. without the spring..

Yeah, I was looking at your pics and mine and saw the same thing, I just wasn’t sure if that was bc mine was more closed then yours..

Yeah when I get the new hinges I’ll compare them side by side, appreciate all of your help!
