Hood Safety Latch - How unsafe to remove??

I think some Jeeps had two of them mounted on the sides, maybe get some of them and do some mods.

jeep cheroke classics / sports . also i thing grand cheroke was like this.

I know I've seen some that have them on both sides, but couldn't remember what on. I'll check out some heeps at the junk yard.

How about using some 1/16" wire rope, firmly attached to the core support, and have a loop on the other end that can be clipped to a carabiner or other clip device that's solidly attached to the hood?

That's what I was looking for! I like that idea and may run with it. Not bulky like chain, easy to use and should do the job if it does pop open. Sometimes I get tunnel vision and can't see what's in front of me.

As tacky as hood pins are, you can do the flusher mounted key ones. Paint them the same color as the truck. At least from a distance it will blend in.

I don't know your set-up but there's a lot of room in the engine bay for a w2a cooler. There more efficient and wont reduce airflow to the radiator.

I've read bad things about the locking pins. As for the w2a, I really don't have the space for it and it would add to the cost of the project (pump, radiator, res, etc) then I'd have to have a place for the res too.

If you're going to remove the latch, just use a cable lock setup. There are plenty of small ones that should work. All you need is a loop that is 1' to 2' lock and a padlock. Just get one that has a rubberized coating so it doesn't scrape up things under the hood or damage your intercooler.

did you see the pictures of what i did to my hood safety latch and fit the intercooler in there? Its possible, just takes a lot of cutting of the safety hook! take a look at my pics.

I've used 1/16" wire rope on many many projects (none truck related, but rather for suspending art in galleries and similar home projects), and find it nice and easy to work with. You might consider putting a loop on both the left and right sides of the core support so that in the event that you have it pop open on the highway, it will prevent the wind from torquing the hood and messing it up.

If you end up going this route and use ferrules to make your loops, I'd recommend a proper set of cable cutters, as they keep the wire round and thus easy to put through the ferrule. Also, since you're using this as a safety device that could potentially see a sudden jerk-like load, you probably ought to use cable ends in addition to the ferrules.
