hooking up ebrakes

What does it involve? Tried a search, but didn`t find much. I`m putting a 14bsf from an 84 Suburban into my 90 Blazer. I noticed that the axle I got had the ebrake cables on them. These are still good right? (is this what they should look like?) There`s one coming off of each drum.

So I took a look under my Blazer to see how they hooked up, and I`m not quite sure how it does. This is what I see under my truck:

The bottom cable comes from the drivers side drum, connects to like a junction thing, then continues to go to the front of the truck. The other cable, as you can see, goes into a section of thread. I`m a newbie to brakes, for the most part, so I`m not quite sure how these hook up.

yeah...um... two different systems. Crappy. The metal lug thingy on the end of the 84 axle would go into a bar, setup like a chain on a door. The newer system has the bolt/nut setup. If e-brake is something you want to keep I would see what it would take to make the current system mate to the new axle. It will either be easy to figure out how to do, or easy to figure out it won't work.

Not sure I understand. It looks like on my current setup that there`s a block where one of the lugs hooked up. Didn`t get a real good look at it, because it was starting to snow.
 
i can't remember, i'd look but it is snowing out..basically they both (elft and right) go to the bracket and then the bolt/nut setup is to adjust it.

I'm going to be in the same boat, adding a 14SF with earlier brakes to my '87.

I have a sneaking suspicion the best option is to convert the 14SF brake cables over to what's in the truck now. I believe they attach the same way to the backing plate and the mechanism under the drum. The 10/14SF to me look darn near identical in brake components, just larger on the 14SF, but I don't think that larger is better mentality extended to the brake cables.

The later setup is better, keep it if you can.

Only problem I foresee is if the distance from where the brake cable clips into the drum, to where the cable terminates (in the swaged on end) is different. Even then the cables may have enough adjustment to solve that.
 
You need the backing plates that match the cables that match the year/ style.

Ex. If you are swapping a '78 14bolt into an 89 with a 10 bolt. You will reuse everything but will need to find some later 14 bolt backing plates. The good news is that you can still swap the axle and wait a few days to switch the plates.
 
What changed on the backing plates?

Some early 14FF cables were bolted into the backing plate I thought, but 10/14SF are all just clipped.

14SF in my truck is out of a '97, but is mated up to an '81 brake cable setup. I bought it that way, however it didn't look like they were changed out.
 
I have a 14 bolt SF out of a 97 and planned to swap the cables from my 10 bolt. I haven't measured anything but it looks like it will work. I'm waiting on the weather to warm up before I tackle it. Maybe the 97 cables would not have worked anyway, but the salvage yard torched them so I never had that option.
