Well I've been on the search for a larger lathe recently, something around the 13" and up range, well I finally found one close by for a decent price. I'm going to look at it Saturday and probably bring it homeIMG_1156.JPG IMG_1157.JPG

It's a pre-1947 south bend 16x60 lathe. Capable of threading and has a through hole of I think 2" roughly.

I realize it looks rough but I seen a bunch of pictures of the ways and they all look pretty nice, no dings or wear lines. The guy says it's fully operational and ready to work but I'm going to check it over pretty good first.

I know you real machinist are going to say it's not a very ridge machine but I'm not too worried about it, I mean I'm not trying to split .0005 or anything.

As long as nothing major is wrong with it I'll probably do a quick cleanup, strip, paint, degrease and reseal everything.

I'd like to pick up a nice 4 jaw some time. And I'm going to get a cxa aloris tool post and some tools. I'd love to put a DRO on it but idk if that's in the cards at the moment.

Nice score. There's a big arbor press at work that they keep moving around but won't sell yet.
I think I'd have plenty of competition if they do though :(

I'd LOVE to have a lathe

Congrats, that lathe looks solid!! i like some of the other stuff in the background too...the drill press, wow! Great table on that! Looks like a killer bandsaw too...I'm very jealous! :waytogo:

Yeah that arbor press was on Craigslist for a couple months because he had it listed as a mandrel press so I assume it never showed up when people searched for one. This particular press was built in 1912, so it's crusty but that's okay for being 105 years old lol

The oneat work would have probably been new in the 40's since that's when the plant was made. Looks that old too. I'm lower on the seniority scale so ill probably have NO chance at it. But it'd be nice.... Not that I have anywhere to put it lol

Thanks, it's a 16x60 South Bend. Everything seems to be in good shape beside the chuck hitting the compound a couple time smh.

The drill press is a 1956 walker turner radial arm drill, 16 speeds from 160rpm up to 8300rpm. The t slot table is pretty nice but it's an odd ball size t slot so I haven't gotten around to making some clamps. I wanted one of those drills for a few years, they're hard to come by around here.

The bandsaw is a 1942 Grob NS-24, 24" throat and 5 different speeds, it has a blade welder but those aren't very useful now days, to me anyway lol

Haha I know how that goes, this one was heavy as crap! Made my engine hoist feel very sketchy lol

Well here's my first little project, a small adapter to mount a buffing wheel in my drill pressIMG_0041.JPG
It's just drilled and tapped 1/4-20, then the cap screws on, the cap has a shallow counter sink to help clamp down on the wheel IMG_0043.JPG IMG_0044.JPG And some proof that it works lol IMG_0039.JPG

Well done sir!! That old lathe has a lot of life left in her. We have an old beast like that we use to cut converters open, it has to be 80 years old if it is a day.

I love old lathes! I ran a 8x48 or something along those lines, in high school. It was an old battleship lathe and was AWESOME! So much better than the modern Jet lathes we had in that shop. Hope you enjoy that thing!

Yeah I'm having a blast with it so far! Can't wait to get some better tooling.
