Hose clamp nightmare's

Those things seem pretty awesome, but I'd be a little nervous still. Also, not sure how to get them off without wrecking the hose?

I have the mayhew ones as pictured in the sears ad for $92, they kick ass. I wouldn't go out and buy the clamps they are used on for reasons already stated. They were worth there weight in gold when I was wrenching flat rate.

I second the comment on not buying harbor freight clamps, they suck. You can't use them for anything.

The last decent ones I bought were stainless ones from Lowes. I can't remember if they had smaller sizes though.

True. It doesn't matter how low the price is on something that has no value. You can't even get them tight on the first use before the threads strip. The plus side is that you won't mind the rapid rusting since it's already in the trash bin.

The Lowe's near me sells "Gold Seal" or "Ideal" clamps either separately,or you can buy "contractor packs" in bulk bags for less--they usually have one or the other brand, not "both" sometimes some in the bins are mixed together--they have the small #4 ones used on fuel lines all the way up to huge ones ,ranging up to a foot or more, even have one super long size thats about 3 feet long!..

The hose clamps I often need that are hard to find for small engines like weed whackers that use 1/8" to 3/16" fuel line are hard to find, and expensive when you do find them, and they are the sucky "pinch" type--so far Lowes has them in an "assortment" blister pack, but I hate paying 5 bucks for 4 different sizes, when I need TWO the same size...motorcycle shops sell them separately for 4 bucks each, and you have to drive 5 miles and hope they have some...
I've resorted to using Tygon fuel line instead, which needs no clamps on low or no pressure applications..thats not easy or cheap to find locally either though..
I used some on my 6.2's fuel return lines that failed about 6 months ago and it works slick,no dinky clamps to get frustrated at,they suck to get at!..

Ideal is the brand our local auto parts store carries. Seem to be pretty good until used to many times. Eventually they'll strip but at that point, they don't owe me nothing.

I do like the spring loaded jobbies that Fordum posted. Used those in a few spots as well. Seem to dig into the hose a little less.

that's the life of boats... eleventy hundred hose clamps taken off at least a few times a yr for winterizing, etc wears em out like you wouldn't believe..

I probably replace a dozen busted hose clamps a week.. and Ideal being a major source of em... I actually wear out snappy 5/16 th's nutdrivers from all the hoseclamp work..

for the ease of my life, I'm glad to see the 5/16 th's Ideal's, but to be honest, they are FAR from the best clamps...

with single cut worm drive they strip out easy, and more importantly can cut/wear hoses bad due to the single cut design..

whereas many of the euro versions (8mm heads) are smooth backed, being much more gentle on hoses and don't strip as easily..

the T-bars are nice in certain apps.. I see plenty in the boats for certain things, big exhaust hose, cummins cooling hoses, etc.... not really viable for 75% of the situations tho...

even automotively, not gonna be the best choice for a lower water pump hose sometimes, but fine for the rad ends where you have the room... definitely nicer to the rubber than worm..
