hot start problem

hi all

I have a problem starting my rig after driving it for a while

I've already did the remote solenoid thing, checked the alternator, starter , recharged the battery and replaced the cables from the battery to starter and from battery to the alternator

the car will start fine when cold
but when warm it will hardly crank (for a second or 2 seconds ) then it will die

I don't think it is a timing issue because advancing or retarding the timing ( by turning the distributer) won't make any difference

what should I look after ?

but it sure sounds like vapor locked fuel line

comp cams Xtreme 4x4 cam
750 cfm edelbrock 1407 carb
sm465 + np205 + stock 1/2 tons

Ohhh and I shoulda read your 1st post closer......It won't crank when hot.

Did you check and clean your grounds?


temperature is creating high resistance or an open somewhere.......

I have a new ground cable going to the alternator
and one to the core support then to the frame

shouldn't than be enough ?

yes probably. what did you mean by you did the solenoid thing already?

were the windings tested? I don't beleive bench testing a starter with one of those ****ty parts store testers can reproduce or diagnose a hot start failure. but a no load free run test would tell you some other things. but you need to know the RPM its spining at. and what voltage.


Honestly what I'd do is get another starter reman with return warantee or maybe a buddy has one or whatever and put it in. find out if it still does it. if it does just return the starter. But I'd bet a new starter fixes it.

Does your rig have the factory heat shield around the starter? They usually get left off after the first starter change. I had the same problem with a 70 Burb with headers. Found a heat shield for the starter, put foil back insulation tween the shield and the starter, and no more problems.

the old one was shot
