Hey Guys.

I know Oil always starts a debate, but hear me out.

I grew up running Castrol GTX in my blazer, then in my burb. Just what my dad always ran in trucks......so its what i ran. He wasn't much of a car maintenance guy, but take it for what its worth.

Anyways, recently started running Mobile Clean 5000.......cause it comes in a 5qt or 5.5qt jug at walmart, and is cheap. If not that, been still running Castrol GTX, or Castrol Hihg MIleage. All 10/30 flavor.

Have always ran Fram filters, just because they are the most available, and have the grippy crap on them. Have known that they suck for a long time, but only recently did kragen start carrying WIX, which i have switched to exclusively.

Question is this: Kragen/Oreilly's is now having specials all the time with a wix filter, and 5 qts of Oreilly's brand synthetic for $20. The wix filter alone is $4-6, and my 5 qt jug of oil from walmart is normally $11-$13.

Any case for or against running the Oreilly's oilchange special?

Really, just curious. Thanks guys!

Ask someone (hopefully knowledgeable) what brand of oil their house brand is. Kragen/Oreilly doesn't make oil it is packaged for them, for instance the CarQuest branded oil is Valvoline (which is what I run) and I also will never run any filter other than a Wix.

You were my knowledgeable source!

Anyone know?

I am 90% sure that their oil is made by Valvoline. Just look at the bottle and if it says "bottled by Ashland oil for......" then it's valvoline and is a decent product.

the guy at my orielly said its Mobil. i think it makes a difference where the store is located too.

IMO,

who really knows?

i thought of a new slogan for an oil company
"your bearings dont care, why should you"

well all is what you prefer.. if you dont mind running cheaper oil then go for it.. im not saying it is not good stuff.. my 1996 camaro i just gave away.. always got pennzoil until it was leaking oil.. then it was whatever... and it made it to 204k miles when the dshaft went.. i bought a silverado and gave it to my neice.. she is driving it right now..

now me .. ever since 1990 i have ran pennzoil and fram filters... i know fram stink as they are cardboard inside and can hurt your motor.. well always worked for me too..

so now i have just switched to synthetic in my 08 silverado and went from 14mpg to 15.5mpg so i just bought some for the mudder.... also i now like the toughguard filters...

oh and even my edger and lawnmower are now synthetic :dunno:

I wouldn't waste the money on synthetic. It is mostly happy dreams and rainbows. In reality a good conventional changed on a regular basis will last just as long. On the farm (as well as off road) it is dirt that kills engine. No oil can protect against dirt that's why you change it. Wixs filters, Gm oil (mobil), valvoline or Brad Penn in flat tappet applications is the best you can get. I run Gm oil in my Hyd roller motors and Brad penn in my flat tappet and solid roller applications.

I will even go out on a limb here and say this. My dad buys coop oil in a 55 gallon drum. He runs it in everything from 5hp briggs to to cars and trucks to the John Deere tractor. It is 15w 40 diesel oil. Running that he has 4 vehicles over 200k and 2 very close. He changes it every 3-5k. Regular changes trump oil quality. In fact the only oil related engine failure we ever had was the 79 c15 I drove to h.s. It ate the cam because the fuel pump filled the crank case with gasoline.
