how can i get more power from my 454?

What are the specs in the new cam? (just curious)

The owner of the machine shop I went to did this exact build on his chevy with the same heads I have and said he hasn't found a better combo for the application

Have you thought about fuel injection?

Some of your problems may be caused by not having the carb tuned properly.

Yes fuel injection is on the list of things to do. Along with gearing. If money wasn't an issue It would be done already.

I have used those same pistons before with great results. My new motor has a Keith Black version of the same as well.

As for the cam I've used a different Crane cam (#10307) that is similar but with a tighter lobe separation and I was really happy with it, it made lots of toque. (this motor had those TRW pistons & 781 heads)

with 4.56 gears and 37's, I would spend the money on FI long before I thought about re-gearing.

FI really livened up my 383 :D

Yes sir. This motor has been a little odd. One example that has me scratching my head is the harmonic balancer is only a 6" and it doesn't have a timing mark except what someone put on there with what looks like white out. Hahaha I'm so glad I'm starting over

Are you getting a new/different balancer to eliminate that mystery?

Yes for sure. I hate guessing or hoping it's right. Summit has a few with all the timing marks so I won't need to add a timing tape to the balancer. Just seems like the right way to go

Here is a question I hate to ask, since you ran a similar cam can you say anything for how it sounded? The cam it had in it was really smooth and didn't have that lope sound that old muscle cars should have. Will this cam have a little more rumble to it?

My cam, #10307, had a lot of lope to it. Not a fast, raspy race engine chop but a very rhythmic lope.

For comparison, the Crane #10307 specs are .533 lift, 226 @ .050 duration and 106° lobe separation ("282" grind).

I love the way a nice lope sounds. The cam it had seriously sounded stock. It was too smooth for my personal taste.

What do you know about these pistons?

The machine shop is having a hard time finding the other ones in the size I need

I'm back looking for some opinions. Do you think I can use these disks to clean the mounting surfaces for my heads? They kind of feel like a scotch bright pad.

Sealed Power is a division of TRW so the brand is good. Those pistons are hyperutectic which basically means they are a high end cast piston. They are not as good as forged (like the L2465F's you were looking at) but they should be fine for a regular Joe motor that's not being turned 6k+ rpm.

As for the abrasive discs, I think the color determines the grit (not sure though). I imagine any scotchbrite type of disc is ok for cast iron but I wouldn't use them on anything aluminum (intake, etc). The discs I'm used to using are brown and made by 3M, they are great for cleaning.

OK thanks! You have been extremely helpful with this project! I really appreciate your input :)
Everyone on here has been great! I'm glad I joined when I did.

You know, I misspoke earlier, I did not use KB pistons. I used those same Sealed Power h693p pistons in my motor (see post #491 in my build thread). Some things you don't think you'll forget but... :doah:
