I got a few things done today. First off I got a call from the stealership and my new proportioning valve had arrived. I had searched all over for a GM part that would bolt directly up in my K5 and prevent the rear disks from locking up. Inline tube has the PV but they want $99 for it. I had heard that a P30 van's valve might fit but could never find confirmation plus GM had two different part numbers. Well I have it and can now confirm the GM part number is 1257225 and GM parts direct lists them for 40.96, almost half the cost of the inline tube part. It also locks to be the exact same part and also the same as the offroad unlimited piece. So this part will fit the 1973-80 Chevy Trucks. I do think in 81 that they changed some of the fittings.
I also started building up my exhaust. I bought a used header back setup from Crazy427. Well as always I couldn't just bolt something up. I wanted the setup to set as much up above the frame rails as possible. So I cleaned up the flanges installed a few new gaskets and broke out the chop saw. A bit of cutting and welding and I got it mounted, built a few hangers and ready to start on the tailpipes. Now as I set back and drink a beer happy with all my work I think humm How hot does a muffler get??? They are 40 series Flowmasters so there shouldn't be that much restriction but I have a concern because it put the passenger side muffler about 2" from the fuel lines. Does anyone think I should be worried?
The only options I see is to:
A - live with it like it is
B - remove the passenger side and take it to a muffler shop and have them put an S bend in it to move it inward (might not be able to do because of t-case)
C- install some type of heat shield around the lines on the frame rail (not sure where or what to get but know it is out there)
Any thoughts from the audience?
I did rebend the lines on the frame rail and installed a few more hangers to keep them all flush on the outer side of them providing the most amount of clearance.
As I look at the pictures now I see I got carried away with the welder. I should have bolted the passenger side hanger to the bracket, because I know have to cut it off and redo it if I want to remove that side.
I also installed some bling (not by choice) all I could find locally to mount my steering wheel was a built adapter. I do know that Grant makes the adapter in black but I only found the billet one. Oh Well It will match the aluminum dash that is planned.

If it were me, I'd bring it up to running temp while keeping an eye on the muffler. See how hot its getting. If you don't like it then stick some light gauge sheetmetal between the muffler and fuel lines. Pretty tough to get a pipe through there and not be close to something.

Well I got the muffler situation fixed by having an S pipe bent. I just cut the pipe off, flipped the muffler over and welded it back up.
I am still having problems getting the rear brakes to fully bleed, but will continue to work on that through the week. I had to get it out of the shop on its own power (been almost a year since it was driven) and take a poser picture. Sorry but that is the biggest thing to crawl on in my driveway
Kert and I had a sweet idea on the custom beadlocks so be watching for those in a few weeks. Hopefully the half doors will be making there way to me shortly also

Awesome that you're making progress man. What are your beadlocks gonna look like? I'm tryin to come up with a good pattern but can't think of anything cool and original lookin.

Oh yeah, and I'm jealous of your mufflers...mine got ripped clean off on Tabletop on Sunday morning...make sure they're tucked up nice and high

No glass for me putting racing nets on the rear side windows and nothing in the back (pics of the window frame on previous page). I am going to gusset the bar but without a tubing notcher that project is in a holding pattern with the cage.
Haha, not tryin to ruin the surprise on your locks, I'm just lookin for inspiration. I want a unique pattern as well and am having a hard time coming up with something.

Kert had some problems with equipment and got a bit behind. But I've got total faith in him and we should be getting some parts soon. I did add some half inch gussets to the front stinger. Should be pretty burly now. And got the rim prep work done ready to weld up some beadlocks. I will do a full writeup with step by step pictorial on that procedure when they arrive.

I found an interesting little tidbit on Pirate also. A warn 9500XP motor can bolted onto an 8274 with the proper pinion gear. That's a 6 hp motor
Soooo...if your motor ever needs to be replaced, hunt down Warn part #68608 (motor) and #15879 (correct pinion gear) and you'll have twice the power of an old school 8274 without rigging dual motors or anything.I've been looking around for you for good deals on tires but the terrain is so different here that Irok's are a rarity...especially 42's with 16" rims. But...you definitely need bigger ones

I had to a little happy dance around the house when I saw them almost finished. I am also getting 5 beadlocks, a long list of tabs for front lighting, hydro assist mounts and a dana 60 cover kit from him.

It has been a week full of meetings with lawyers over the sale of my business. I did pick up a gooseneck trailer designed to haul a terra gator. So a bit of work got done on moding it to haul the K5.
I also stripped some bling off a wrecked truck and thought it added my personal touch
Still waiting on parts for the hydro assist so no progress there. And now I am freaking out on where to move the bucket if the sale of the store goes through.

Got some goodies in today and couldn't help myself so a welding I started.
I had talked back and forth with Kirk and was originally planning to send the wheels to him to have the locks welded up. I then opted to get them done at a local welder because of shipping cost. Now I have changed my mind again and thought hey it is a DIY product so I should do it myself.
Instead of using some fancy welders I broke out the Home Depot special and got to work. First off the fit of these locks is so perfect I am glad I have new wheels there was near no gap on my rock crawler wheels. I had the wheel already preped and Kirk sent out one standard 5 hole beadlock since this is going on the spare. The other 4 will be customs from Kirk.
I laid out a spacing for the welds with a sharpie (doesn't work well) Then started welding up swapping from side to side leaving plenty of gaps. I then took a flapper wheel and cleaned off all the beads to near smooth and confirmed the welds. Nice penetration and pattern but these wire flux welders through splatter everywhere. I decide to put an old towel in the center of the wheel to protect the poweder coating and only had to pour water on it once
I did the stich welds in a lug nut tightening pattern and then flapper wheel process about 4 times before finishing a full wheel. Now I need to confirm with Kirk that I didn't screw up because I smoothed most of the weld off. I didn't get it down to perfectly flat so there is some weld left but I got most of it. Should I have left the bead? I can run another bead if needed. But after staring at it and no experience with beadlocks I am not sure. Do I need the strength off a larger weld or the smooth finsh for the bead to seal. I think the bead will fall lower then the bead but not to sure?
Anyways here are some pictures of the readneck door workbench, Home Depot welder and the step by step pictures of my work. I think even with the lack of confidence this is a DIY project and people should really think about giving it a try for themselves. Man, with your whole shop you didn't have a tank of welding gas somewhere? Welds look nice. When are you going to reveal your super secret beadlock pattern?
I would be going nuts if I had that many bling parts and hadn't hit the trail yet. Kudos to you for sticking with it and doing it right the first time.
I think I might be going on another run on the 19th so I'll make sure and post up plenty of poser shots to make you jealous. Also, we'll see how the body and frame do after this run....I might be going full tube in the near future...know anyone who wants to sell a notcher, bender, and plasma cutter?
