break a dana 50? i was at a shop yesterday and someone had broken the pinion shaft, inside the housing, in TWO places... and on 35" bfg a/ts at that... i was just wondering what kind of abuse it would take, that pinion shaft is about 1" to 1 1/8" thick...

i was figuring, hooked to somethin heavy and lettin it eat and hop??
 
did the truck have a snow plow on it? I have seen some particularly idiotic individuals do some downright retarded stuff to an otherwise nice truck with a plow on it.
 
well hence the dana 50 part lol... i was just wondering how a pinion shaft breaks.. i mean it only had a 5.4 anyways..

Well, despite having a 9" ring gear and a correspondingly decent sized pinion gear the pinion shaft is pretty small in the D50. According to the specs, it is 1.375" in diameter. By comparison the D44 has a 1.437" shaft, and the 10b and D60 have 1.625" shafts. Pinion shafts have a LOT of load on them: both torsional and bending loads. Usually the smaller shaft allows the pinion to deflect away from the ring gear, and the high loads move toward the top of the gear teeth. This usually results in gear tooth failure. However, it is possible that the weenie shaft on the D50 might fail before the teeth. Either that, or it had a flaw of some kind.. although some could argue that a 1.375" pinion shaft in 9" ring geared 30 spline diff is a flaw of the design variety :whistle:
 
I'd be willing to bet he got it airborn, and came down under full throttle. When someone does that, unless the ground is verrrry loose/soft, it puts a tremendous strain on the pinion shaft and teeth; sometimes even shattering the pinion gear.

back to the 10b vs. d44, isnt that grounds to say that a 10b is stronger?
