My 79 chevy wont pass smog passes fine @ 2500 rpms fails miserably @ idle, also it wont idle for long and then dies. Have checked many things and fixed a lot of crap including replacing carb. Does anyone know if the plate from the manifold to the hot air choke tube absolutely needs to be air tight. And what about the egr would it cause this. This is what I think I have it narrowed down to but any other input would be appreciated.

It sounds like you need to adjust your carb for starters? Did you make any adjustments when you replaced it?

A quick fix would be to create a vacuum leak by pulling a hose loose. It will run clean for the time you test it. Then hook the hose back up after.

A bad EGR will cause it to die @ idle. I had the same problem at one time, replaced the EGR valve, problem fixed. This was on an 81 CJ with a 304 in it.

Leaving a vacuum hose off in California means and instant fail IF the smog tech sees it.
