the bracket on the right in the pic below is the firewall plate off of an '82 3500 hydroboost.

although it's hard to see in this pic, there is a notch in the hydroboost on the left hand side with some sort of lock that slides into it. according to the mechanic I talked to, he had a socket big enough to fit over the nut, but there is a special tool needed to push that lock piece into the nut so that it can be turned. he claimed that it was not designed to be removed.

I told him that was nuts. how the hell are you supposed to replace a hydroboost if you can't get the bracket off?!?

I'm posting here hoping one of you guys has dealt with something like this before and have some idea.

another angle on it:

have you checked to see what replacements look like? Might already have that bracket on it. :dunno:

Otherwise, you can't get the ring off with a flathead or spreaders? Even with a little "love".

What's on the other side? Why do you want to take it off? I've done a couple Hydroboost conversions and never taken one off? Just mount the whole plate. :waytogo:

yeah, all of the replacements come with no bracket. it seems to me like I should be able to stuff something down in that hole to push the pin back, but I haven't tried that yet. I don't have a socket or wrench that big, so I took it to a chevy dealership to see if they could remove it. gonna check back with them at lunch and see if they come up with anything.

@eagle mark: I have a hydroboost unit off of a '95 that was in great shape that I want to install, but the bracket for that one (that is the flat plate to the left in the pic) wouldn't work for my '72. the bracket on the right is out of an '82. it will work, but the hydroboost it is attached to was a rusted out POS, so I'm trying to switch units.

I suppose its likely that if I kept looking I could find a decent unit with the right bracket already installed, but none of the rebuilt units from any year have a bracket installed, so at some point, someone is going to have to figure this out. now I've got my teeth into this issue and want to find the answer even if I have to cut the nut off.

well, I went back to the dealership to see how it was coming. turns out that the slot on the nut was supposed to have a key in it, but the key was already out, so a non-issue. the nut was just on there damn tight!
nothing an air chisel and some heat couldn't fix. they got it done, so I'm good to go!

Damn, what a ripoff! Kert could make you one of those for like $20 I bet:eek1:
