How do I know if my hubs are locked or unlocked

Jack up, spin tires, if driveshaft moves, locked, driveshaft no move, no locked. Unless they are auto hubs. Are there dials? Should say locked or free if so

Easy way is to put hub to lock position. Go underneath and you can try and spin The axleshaft. If it doesn't spin the hub is locked. Should move a little but that's the easiest way. If its in 4 wheel on the transfèr case you can lift the wheel and see if it still free spins or locks and if both are locked you should not be able to spin it more than 1/8 turn to lock soider gears and take up slop in driveline.

Turn as tight as it will go in an open lot, you'll know if the hubs are locked or not.

Only if the T-case is in 4WD and/or there is a locker in front. With an open diff you can lock the hubs and turn as tight as you want as long as you are in 2WD.

An 89 probably came with a auto hubs and definitely with a part-time transfer case. If the hub is smooth and says "4x4", they are auto hubs. If there is a dial or knob to turn, they are manual hubs. The process to engage the auto hubs is to stop, put the T-case in 4WD and drive. To unlock, put it back in 2WD and then back up. Manual hubs are self explanatory.

The process to check engagement (as given by previous posts) is the same regardless of what kind of hub you have. Their job is to tie the wheel/hub to the axleshaft.

Fine, but this guy probably already figured it out and won't come back to this forum...
