How do i open the rear k5 tailgate?

My 1991 Jimmy has this same problem, even with the window down the tailgate wont budge. I tried pushing in/pulling up all that stuff.
I guess I need to remove that inner panel and see whats up, but before I do is there any parts I should order first so I remove/repair all the same time?

Once inside, I sprayed a lot of WD-40 on the latches and then have to give my handle a FIRM by steady pull to get it to open. Try that first.

Okay Im gonna take that panel off and take a look, after research it seems that safety switch for the glass may be the culprit. If thats it Im just gonna run some jumpers and bypass that. Hopefully I can fix this for free with just some maintenance like you said.

The safety switch should only stop the up down motion of the window.
I had to get a new rod from a junk yard for mine cause some one bent it and it wouldnt push down on the release. once you get the panel off you can see how the release works its pretty simple.

from what I read there is one that wont let you lower the tailgate because it thinks the window isnt fully down. My glass works fine, but I will definately check those rods

What the hell lol

Couldnt you have just reached over the backseat?
It's been my experience that sometimes when you need waders......
You need them NOW:D

okay guys, removed the panel and pulled on the rods and it opened. The problem was this tailgate had not been opened in probably 10 years, you could leave the gate at a 45deg angle and it would stay there. I put some lube and worked it some and its working good now but still not 100% but it does open.

I bought this from a one owner that were old people that hardly ever drove it and obviously never loaded groceries in the back lol

Check the rod from the latch for any signs of bending. There is a deliberate flat spot in that rod, and when things get sticky and bind the rod bends there making it much harder to open. I had to rebuild that rod, mine bent bad enough that it broke.

you talking about that rod that goes from each end of the gate up under the frame near the hinge?...or the rods that connect to the handle inside?

The flow path is handle lifts, drives a rod down, which rotates a mechanism which pulls the two long rods inward, which releases the latches at the corners.

The rod driven down by the latch has a deliberate flat spot, and it will often bend at that flat spot in the rod. The two long rods that go to the corners of the gate never seem to have problems.

with the inner panel off you will notice a z shaped rod that when the Bottom of the window pushes it all the way down pulls the rod out of a slot in the latch assembly.look for the z shaped rod that goes thru a White plastic bushing that has a spring hooked to it pull down on it until it stops.then pull the handle. If that bar is not pulled down all you are going to do by pulling on the inside handle is bend or break it.your other choice is to pull on the rods that go to each side to open the tail gate.look and you will see what i meen.
