My drivers side is pretty much broken, but the passenger side is okay. I think I will just get another one. How do I get this thing off? Do I need to take the door panel off? If so how do I do that?

On an 87, there are two screws down thru the arm rest, two thru the door latch bezel, and a series of screws around the lower portion of the panel. Then there are some plastic "pop ins" that hold it. Take off the door lock, pick up on the panel and work it past the door latch. Take off the blue plastic nut on the back of the door lock switch by turning and pulling out on it. Unplug the wires, plug in the new switch, replace the nut by simply pushing it on the stud replace the door panel. Sounds involved, but only takes a couple of minutes.

Squirt some dielectric grease on teh contacts. These see a fair amount of moisture being in teh door.....the ones i cleaned up were pretty corroded, and i'm in CA.

Be careful when removing the top sil part of the door panel from the door, they are easy to crack.
