Ok, I'm seriously considering a purchase of a 86 M1008 to do a 1-ton conversion on my 85 K5 Blazer. I've received some pictures from the seller. Here they are (a little blurry):

While on the phone with the seller he mentioned that the truck has been in water and he was concerned about water intrusion (in the axles), but that the breather tubes are pretty high so there shouldn't be a problem.

From the looks of the front axle, drivers-side... there is a leak and he did confirm that. My question for the ColoradoK5 crew is... how much am I looking at to rebuild these axles? What is a fair price for a 86 M1008 in this condition (the truck is in fairly good running order.. but I'm only concerned with the parts). I think if I take the parts off the truck and sell the rest, I'd be in good shape.

Thanks

$800 for the whole truck.

These trucks sell for $3500+ on ebay (in admittedly better condition). The seller of this truck is asking $2000.

The only items I really want are the axles. No bone yards around me have 14-bolt FF laying around (or for that matter... D60's).

The 4.56 gearing is what I want, and the rear comes with a locker. Sounds like the perfect setup for me, I just don't want to get screwed over on price, especially if I have to rebuild the axles.

I got my axles from a m1008, I paid 1k for the front and 400 for the rear. They were in much worse shape then those two. I say 2k is well worth it.

front axle seal leaking. req pull of ring gear/carrier to replace. not a bad job. just time.

then rear pinion seal area damp. possible seal easy.

rear will require spring pearch and shock tab move. 1 ton spacing diffrent than 1/2-3/4 ton. easy mod with welder.

but otherwise thay look good . but i live in the rust belt. my stuff is chunky with rust. :doah:

I paid 1700 a few months back for a runner. Had 4.56's with detroit and trac-loc. Runs good and trans is tight. Im having a little trouble getting rid of the truck after i swapped the axles out of it.

garydan...im on the other coast from you, just south of tampa, and have locally bought two sets of cucv axles(4.56's and detroits) for 900 a set....both had less than 20k miles on them. ill see what i can do to get you a set....also, i have a 14FF if you want it, for a fellow ck5'r...come get it and it's yours...have carrier and 3.73 gears in it(open carrier).

ill PM you tomm if i can get you a set of axles brother...

well in regard to how they look...... i would say ridden hard and put away wet.

lots of leaks, lots of rust, lots of crap hanging from them like a swamp thing halloween costume. Id say that thing has seen lots of submarine duty. Id at least pop the covers and check to make sure the gears are in good condition.

And id certainly do a rebuild on all the gaskets and seals.

Are these axles close enough to you to go look at in person? If so, I would pull the rear cover and verify ratio and if it's got a Detroit Locker (which it should if it's from a CUCV). I question at least the rear axle because of the colored sticker on the cover, a sticker like that is used to identify axles with a Gov Lock limited slip (which was never used in a CUCV). If it's got a Detroit then it's all good, just verify what you're paying for.

good eye man..i didn't even notice that.... also, every m1008 i've ever seen had that rear brake proportioning thingy on the top of the 14ff.... doesn't look like this one does...something's up.

oh yeah, i didn't get your PM buddy...

I found a link that said "Send Email" so I did that. I've never used the PM feature on here, maybe that's a "premium" feature. I'm not a full member here yet.

Something else I noticed, a CUCV will not have dual exhaust. Any pics of the rest of the truck? Maybe get a pic of the VIN plate, it's a special tag for CUCV's.

It's definitely a CUCV. It has the 24 volt system, the truck looks like one. (Has the correct bumpers... single exhaust...etc)

Ive bought both a 1008 and 1009, both had dual exhaust.

Look at the 4th and last picture. That truck has dual exhaust. Not saying that its not a CUCV but that truck has duals.
