2 years ago I bought an '87 V30 DRW complete truck from another member here. He told me he lost the title. Misplaced it, so I asked him for a Bill Of Sale just for proof and to send me the title whenever he found it since I was there to pick up the rig and wasn't in a hurry for the title right away.

Fast forward 2 years. I need the title now and I sent him a message on Facebook to ask if he would reregister or reapply for a new one. I offered to pay the costs of the reapplication. Simple enough?

Still no answer or reply from him and he has made a few comments on FB, so at least I know he's still around and active there. He's just not replying back to me. Don't know if I'm getting blown off or what.

So, the big $64K question is how do I go about getting a new title? I know it can be done but if anyone knows the process, can you explain or give a brief rundown?

I don't want to part out this truck because its 99.9% rust free and it would be a shame to do so.

In Idaho you can file for a lost title. Go into the DMV give them the vin they send a certified letter to the last title holder. Previous title holder has 30 days to respond. It costs like 50 bucks here. I have had a couple friends do it with on problems

What happens after 30 days if the PO doesn't respond?

they set you on fire....

honestly dunno, but i have had to file for lost titles before, sometimes teh DMV is worth the pain.

Don't know how it works where you are, but in Texas, the PO is still the legal owner. You would have to contact him and he would have to sign the title over to you. If he truely lost it, he must file for a replacement title.

Probably the best thing to do first, is go to your DOT office and ask for instructions on what to do.

What he said.

No clue about Kentucky here (I'm sure it's stupid and overly complicated like all things car registration related) but in Michigan you do pretty similar to to what blazinzuk said. Few friends did it.

I've had that situation come up on a car I sold. In order to get a new title, I had to show ownership of the vehicle, by a previous registration, that showed my name and the vin of the vehicle. Then it was a $15? fee for a "replacement" title.

In Nebraska you can just hang a door off of a pickup you have a title for, take it to the DMV, and have them title it as an assembled vehicle. FMSTruck on here did that to his last K5.

as everyone said, you need to see how it is in YOUR state.
I am in the process of getting a replacement title on a truck I bought 3 years ago and never finished the transfer and I lost the paperwork, mine is complicated because the truck was financed and the bank sent the PO the title with the lien released but he never took it in to DMV to put it on record so I lost the only proof he had.
I am talking to the bank and they are getting me another release then I got the PO's release and I will have a replacement title for the price of $15:doah:

Just be glad it's not Texas Parks & Wildlife you have to deal with. I'm trying to get the first title on an outboard I bought in 1977. It wasn't required for an outboard to be titled then and it wasn't. Now to sell it I have to have a title. Been working on it for a month now. I send in the money and paperwork, they send it back wanting more info. I send it, it comes back. Been over a week since I sent it the last time so maybe it will go thru now.

also the title fee's are jumpin bigtime.

in ny state transfer of title from owner to owner now is frigin crazy . aint no 15 bucks

Just got back from talking to the local DMV and also went over to the sheriffs dept.

DMV can't do much. We chatted about the local bail bondsman's wife and how they repo cars, etc. and get titles.

So I went up to talk to this lady and she started checking her computer for the necessary paperwork but couldn't find them right away. She said to come back in a day or so and she'll see if she can find them then.

Next I went back to the shop and looked in the V30's glovebox for any papers. Found registration and insurance papers but none of them were in the sellers name. So I took all the papers and the tag to the sheriffs dept. to have them process the VIN.

The VIN came back to the sellers name. Whew! Its a legal truck. Sheriffs deputy said as long as I had the Bill Of Sale and a copy of the Pay Pal transaction with the seller, I'll be ok and safe. Just need to go thru the legal process of obtaining the title.

As the deputy and I agreed, it would be soooooooooooooooooo much easier and simpler if the seller would just reapply for a new title and I reimburse him for it.

if something happens and you cant title it just buy a real cheap truck and swap out the dash support that has the vin riveted to it. doesnt sound like fun but if thats the only way you gotta do what you gotta do. im sure you could buy a wrecked or rotted truck for about 300 bucks then scrap it or part it and make your money back. i dont know if its legal to do that but i got a couple of hot rodder guys and they just find something thats close to what there building and title it as what the dash is

Yeah on these truck it's a prtty easy job too but if he can get the title for under $100 it's worth a little legwork.:doah:

The thought has already crossed my mind but this truck is in too good of condition and I want to keep it. I also want to keep it a true 1 ton 4x, so the title needs to reflect that.

Plus, I don't wanna go to jail.

I went through title woes when I bought my truck...I bought it from a forum member and he was enlisted and stationed in Texas...the truck was in California...they never got the title transferred into the seller's name so the original owner would have had to have gone to the Cali DMV and paid a whopping big fine for two years worth of penalties...needless to say, he wasn't about to do that...I tried but with no luck.

I contacted the California DMV myself and they said that they would issue me a title for the truck if I sent them $150.00...I did...then I got a letter from them that said I had to have the original owner's signature...I couldn't get it...they tried to stick me with over $600 in fines and fees...I ended up losing the $150.00 and got no title...

Luckily, Alabama is a "No Title" state...all you need is the Bill of Sale...and they won't even issue a Title for a car older than 1975....can't get it if you wanted it...

So, I don't have a Title but it doesn't really matter as long as I don't try to sell it to someone who lives in a "Title Only" State...but I don't plan on selling it.

Lesson learned, I will never, ever buy another vehicle out of state...period. Nor will I ever buy a car without the title being transferred to me right there on the spot...

Yeah CA is sneaky, they lure you in with a small fee and little paperwork then when you get that they say, we also need this, that, and that and this and you need to pay another fee before we can finalize this.
If they tell you from the beginning you wouldn't even bother, so they trick you.
They did that to me on this last one but it was worth it because the PO had it on Non Op and since I didn't finalize my transfer 3 years ago, it was still on Non Op and they refunded me $62 instead of me paying a few hundreds.
I have had that before too where the PO paid some amount and turns out he didn't need to and since I am the new owner I got the refund.
But you have to have lots of buying and selling to get a few cases like this, and I have...

Yes...there was $300 of that was some kind of "emissions" fee or something?

Where I made my mistake was being honest...I sent back the original title trying to transfer it but would have been better to have said it was lost and then lied about truck saying it sat unoperational for 2 years...
but I don't do that kind of stuff...if I can't get things done honestly, I won't do it at all. They did send me back the original title with VOID stamped on it...that really helps a lot.
Although I know I don't need a title, somehow it just doesn't feel complete without one...I think it's just a stigma...everybody "thinks" you got to have a title because you do with a newer car...
But I had a friend of mine who is a Police Officer run the VIN and tag and there was nothing out there so it was clean...even the Police had no info on a truck that old, the only thing that would have showed up is if it were stolen or involved in a crime.
