I was trying to help a friend out today. He was changing the filter in his 2002 Silverado, but we couldn't get the little round seal out of the valve body, where the filter plugs in.

Anyone know a trick to getting that thing out? We were trying to use some little picks made for pulling gaskets and seals, with no luck. That thing is seriously in there. To make things worse, we boogered up the rubber seal in it, so it's totally unusable. It now MUST be replace. :doah:

The seal is a rubber covered metal ring. It gets wedged in good sometimes. You can use a hook shaped pick to pull it out. Or you can drive a pick or small screwdriver between the rubber seal and the housing. Just be carefull not to score the aluminum housing.

You should replace it anyway when replacing the filter.

ya, i had to take a lobster pick and some other little tiny pointy things to get my seal out. i basically had to keep doing that til i got it. try cutting it, maybe that will help.

Didn't try a screwdriver. The main concern was damaging the valve body, that's why we were using the small picks. They have a little screwdriver handle on them...we got them at Autozone this evening.

A big problem is, we're not on flat ground, and don't have it jacked up. The clearance under there sucks, especially compared to my stock-height K5. It's hard to get to where you can look directly at the valve body. I can do anything underneath the K5 without jacking it up.

I wedged a pick between the housing and the ring and then grabbed it witha pair of needle nose pliers on my 4L80E.

Well, I could feel the edge of the seal with my finger, so there may be enough material there to wedge something behind it.

Does it suck as much putting the new one in?

I had the problem of a po putting a ring/seal on top of a another. Picked till the picks wouldnt pick no more, got the 1st one, then did a search before I got real, real mad at the second one. The trick is to get a small screwdriver on the bottom edge, angle inside the bore and bitch slap it with the palm of your hand. One slap, dont be scared:eek1:.
Heres a couple pics from a thread of mine-

Comes right out, saves the picks.

Thanks! :waytogo:

This one worked for him. He was really surprised how easily it came out using this method. Truck is back on the road. :D
