How do you seal your Diffs?

please specify the specific type of sealer and/ or gasket that your prefer.

I must be the odd-ball, I use only a gasket... just like GM did.

Just replaced a leaking diff gasket with The right stuff. I stopped buying gaskets. I buy the caulk tubes of the right stuff and use it for everything:

transmission pan
oil pan
thermostat housing
diff cover
transfer case
intake manifold
valve covers
yoke splines

Should never be used on a auto transmission pan.. A chunk from the inside could come of and cause havoc to the internals.

Damn skippy! That is all I use anymore unless I absolutely need part of the gasket. It's also spec'd as the factory replacement "gasket" by most of the major automotive manufacturers now. You can even use it to seal headers to the block.

The transmission filter stops the chuncks just fine. You need not worry about havoc in your transmission.

A Felpro Gasket and High Tac spray by Permatex is what I use...
With the front especially...since I have my ram attached to the cover.

It basically "glues" the cover on. Anything else just doesn't seal..
banging covers with rocks. I've found petrolium based lubricants break down the blue stuff.

My second choice would be permatex's orange silicone.

just don't use the grey stuff like i did......had to destroy the cover to get it off.

for another basis of comparison, i use the grey on the 3rd members in my Zuk. to get them to break loose, i have to jack the TRUCK up by the third member.

did it say jb weld on it?

I'm going to use a gasket on mine, with a thin film or black rtv

I use gaskets, they are cheap and easy. Plus I don't have to clean the gasket surface everytime I pull the cover (weekly it seems )

Orange RTV. For a diff gasket, theres not enough heat to worry about which RTV you're using, as long as its oil safe. And the bead of orange around the diff cover is about as obnoxious as gasket material can get.

I don't know what kind of transmission filter you use, but the ones I buy look like nothing more than window screen...

Whatever I have!...

I used to be anal and buy Permatex "Ultra-Blue" gasket RTV stuff for anything that is oil soaked like valve covers or diff covers,etc..but lately since I've been low on cash,I use whatever I have hanging around,like "Ultra Copper",or plain Blue RTV--better than letting it harden up in the tube and go to waste!

Lately I've gotten a lot of Fel-Pro's "Black" RTV in the little tubes that come in gasket sets my friend never used--he buys big caulking gun sized tubes,and the little ones get tossed or harden before he uses them,so he gives them to me!--can't say I've had BAD luck with ANY of the RTV sealants I've used really..some of the "off brands" dont work that great--I tend to stick with Permatex or Fel-Pro..

You can even use it to seal headers to the block.

My headers are bolted to the heads, not the block... but anyway enough of me being a dick. I have a problem with my headers and exhaust leaks, I usually double up on thick gaskets. Ive tried everything from what comes with headers to copper. I blame Edelbrock and their aluminum heads. Ive used 3 different headers. Tho I would think it would be difficult with the "goop." I know I would get it everywhere. I like being able to loosly have a bolt in on each end then dropping the gaskets in.

But ya I keep a tube of blue and black RTV in my tool box. Last diff I did I used the orange, and its lasted 3 years so far with no probs.

I used to use Permatex Black RTV or Ultra Copper. Then awhile back I was talking to a friend of mine that is a big rig diesel mechanic and he said all they use in his shop was Permatex Ultra Grey and that it was good stuff. I gave it a try and have liked it sofar.

So my vote was gasket maker Permatex "Ultra Grey".

Gasket & shelac(sp?) or

Loctite 574, its a sealant that is used to join porsche engine cases, supposedly will hold 200+ psi in a 1/4" gap... dont know if it's true but it works great, and it's free for me...(30$ a tube if you dont get leftovers from your favorite porsche mechanic)

but, i wouldnt use it on shiny new bling parts as it usually take a BFH and a pry bar to remove the cover later...

but there is some new 518 loctite i'd like to try, its advertised as better for higher temps
