How do you test the Front axle U-Joints

best method is to pull the axle out of the differential
then rotate the stub through all angles, if you feel any resistance or grinding, replace them
without pulling them from the axle housing, its really hard to tell for sure, but when in doubt, replace them

take frt shaft from case and twist it by hand and watch for play. or look for rust from caps. and last like above listed. and in my opinon only use the best spicer or brute force joints in the frt axle area.
Asked a similar question a couple of weeks back, didn't really get much of an answer.
I was looking at mine under the truck, and noticed that there was a "crack" in the material over the u-joint cap (uses a small pressed in metal cap I guess) and the axleshaft, which is apparently paint, because it's hard.
I suspect this is an indication that they are going bad. The one axleshaft I've seen before that had a bad joint in it was also missing this, like the u-joint caps start to walk out of the axleshaft or something. Just looked it up in the parts manual, they don't break it down any further than "u-joint repair kit".

I just pulled mine to replace the ball joints and I found both sides are bad. They only move on one plane by hand, I can't believe something didn't break last weekend!
thats exactly how i discovered mine were bad... replacing the ball joints
