another oil filter story...
My friends dad bought a new ford pickup a few years ago, with the 300 straight six motor--he complained from day one that the engine had a loud tapping noise upon starting it after sitting overnight, especially if it was cold out...the service manager checked the oil pressure, and it was normal--no noises after it warmed up--they suspected piston slap or faulty hydraulic lifters, and told him not too worry about it,it had been documented under warranty,if anything in the engine failed they would replace it no charge...
About 3000 miles go by,and he brings the truck back to the dealer for its second oil change(and filter)--the mechanic went to the parts counter at the dealer to get a filter, the owner was standing at the counter asking about some accessories for his truck--the parts counterman told the mechanic he was speaking to the owner about the engine noises, and he told him it was not an uncommon occurance on the 300 six or many of fords other engines to get a "rattle" sound for several seconds after starting!-..
-he then whispered in his ear and said"you didnt hear it from me,but if you want the noise to go away, buy a wix or AC-Delco oil filter, and I bet you wont hear that noise anymore!"..So the owner had him call a local parts store and deliver a Wix filter, and guess what??--after the initial start after the oil change,it was the last time he heard the noise, only once did he detect just a few taps on a cold morning, nothing like it used to sound--I heard it myself a few times,it sounded like no oil pressure at all for several seconds, and the rods would rattle like a rattlesnake!-(or something else besides the rods!)
-It seems the motorcraft filters dont always have an anti-drain back valve,or the ones that do dont always work--allowing the oil in the horizontally mounted filter to drain back into the crankcase, and causing a 'dry start',that takes several seconds to "re-prime" the oil pump and fill the filter back up...But of course Ford would not pay for the "non OEM" oil filter, and balked at not using one of their own motorcraft ones..The owner has 25,000 miles on it now,and has used only Wix or Baldwin filters, and hasnt heard any noises since..but he wonders how many miles of life got scuffed off his bearings and other parts when the noises were occurring..

--not something you'd expect a brand new vehicle to do...
With all theese brands of filters out there,it makes me wonder just how many manufacturers there are??---like batteries,it seems there is only a few factories cranking them out--and they paint whoevers name is selling them on them!--I know Champ,Purolator,Fram, and Hastings make most of them, and sell them to "re-boxers" with their logo and choice of paint scheme on them...Its hard to know just what your buying nowadays--brand names dont mean squat anymore, now that greed is more important than quality...
