How good is your oil filter (link to pics)

somewhere on the net there is a oil filter research study that goes into ludicrous detail. The guy literally went out and bought 3 of pretty much every oil filter on the market, used 1 to cut up when new and the other two he used. No idea how he used so many filters... but at any rate it was crazy how much info he had on them. His basic verdict on Frams was that there are 3 models... the cheap one is crap (surprise!) but even more interesting is that the middle-of-the-road priced one (tough guard? I forget) is actually a pretty good filter... while the spendy model fram is crap (only slightly better than the cheapo). Weird. I forget all the reasons why, but this guy knew more about oil filters than anyone I have ever heard from so I'll take his word for it. Anyway, Ive been running them TG frams ever since...

I know you guys will love reading his sight. People are fanatical about their oil and filters....

I will say this- I know after reading the website, I wasnt buying anymore fram filters- but under the same token, I was also convinced by my friend to run "fram" again, because he said, "i've ran fram for x number of years without any problems..."

However, In the past couple of weeks- I've been having some ticking on cold startups in the morning- Took a few minutes to go away. It was time to do an oil change anyways, so, i went ahead and gave it a quick change (exxon 5w30) and a new filter (Autozone special, made by champion labs, same as an STP)

The result? No more ticking on cold startup. Scary, but true. Now, some might say its the oil that was old, but it had only 3200 miles on it before the change. This rinky dink Autozone special is acutally better made than the frams.

I dont think I have any Fram filters left. Good riddance. (Too bad Walmart only changes your oil with Fram filter- Wonder if you can ask for something else).

I have heard alot of good things about wix filters, if I dont care much or I just want to get it done I run a fram, but I only do that on a motor I could care less about, if its a big block..she gets ac delco

other wise I just usually get my oil changed at a dealership and get the ac delco one:yikes: funny thing is, thanks to my friends discount my oil change is just 11 bucks:deal: :saweet:

plus I love the look on the service techs face when I pull in:D

we use Wix exclusively in the boats... everything from EFI gas stuff to 871 Detroits.. good filters..

Ask them to use their own brand oil filter. Walmarts super Tech 2000 filters are made by Champ filters. They are a lot better filter than fram. Cheaper too. They are all I use in my DD cars. Have used them in my K5 with no problems. But it usually gets a WIX filter, my Hotrod Mustang gets only Motorcraft (glad Wall mart still sells those cheap:) )

another oil filter story...

My friends dad bought a new ford pickup a few years ago, with the 300 straight six motor--he complained from day one that the engine had a loud tapping noise upon starting it after sitting overnight, especially if it was cold out...the service manager checked the oil pressure, and it was normal--no noises after it warmed up--they suspected piston slap or faulty hydraulic lifters, and told him not too worry about it,it had been documented under warranty,if anything in the engine failed they would replace it no charge...

About 3000 miles go by,and he brings the truck back to the dealer for its second oil change(and filter)--the mechanic went to the parts counter at the dealer to get a filter, the owner was standing at the counter asking about some accessories for his truck--the parts counterman told the mechanic he was speaking to the owner about the engine noises, and he told him it was not an uncommon occurance on the 300 six or many of fords other engines to get a "rattle" sound for several seconds after starting!-..

-he then whispered in his ear and said"you didnt hear it from me,but if you want the noise to go away, buy a wix or AC-Delco oil filter, and I bet you wont hear that noise anymore!"..So the owner had him call a local parts store and deliver a Wix filter, and guess what??--after the initial start after the oil change,it was the last time he heard the noise, only once did he detect just a few taps on a cold morning, nothing like it used to sound--I heard it myself a few times,it sounded like no oil pressure at all for several seconds, and the rods would rattle like a rattlesnake!-(or something else besides the rods!)

-It seems the motorcraft filters dont always have an anti-drain back valve,or the ones that do dont always work--allowing the oil in the horizontally mounted filter to drain back into the crankcase, and causing a 'dry start',that takes several seconds to "re-prime" the oil pump and fill the filter back up...But of course Ford would not pay for the "non OEM" oil filter, and balked at not using one of their own motorcraft ones..The owner has 25,000 miles on it now,and has used only Wix or Baldwin filters, and hasnt heard any noises since..but he wonders how many miles of life got scuffed off his bearings and other parts when the noises were occurring.. --not something you'd expect a brand new vehicle to do...

With all theese brands of filters out there,it makes me wonder just how many manufacturers there are??---like batteries,it seems there is only a few factories cranking them out--and they paint whoevers name is selling them on them!--I know Champ,Purolator,Fram, and Hastings make most of them, and sell them to "re-boxers" with their logo and choice of paint scheme on them...Its hard to know just what your buying nowadays--brand names dont mean squat anymore, now that greed is more important than quality...

Ive always ran a fram on my k5.
On my BBC in my camaro, i run a no bypass adapter and a cartridge style Canton oil filter.. supposed to filter down to 8 microns.

AC delco and napa gold are supposedly the best designed oil filters.... something about back filter or something like that... im sure somebody around here knows what i mean. I know a couple builders that won't use anything but ac delco oil filters.
