How hard is it to work on manual transmission?

So I bought a 1998 K2500 with a 6.5 and a nv4500.

Anyway so recently(ish) it got a new input shaft. New hydraulics and a new clutch.
Anyway the problem is I'm pretty sure the synchros for 3rd gear are gone/going as it grinds going into 3rd all the times.

So having no experience with these or the inner workings of any manual, how hard is it to address this issue? Does that call for a complete tear down/rebuild or can it be a quick fix to get me for a year or two?

Any help is appreciated.

While I've never had a nv4500 open, all the other manual trans I've worked on usually involve needing a decent press and some three jaw pullers.

Just takes some patients and sweet talk to get things apart and back together. If I had one torn down I'd just rebuild instead of just replacing the worn parts. I mean you're already there

From my admittedly imperfect memory...the mainshaft and counter shaft ride on opposing tapered roller bearings requiring the end play to be set using shims. Not hard, and you could probably just re-use yours. I didn't need a press, just some burly snap ring pliers and regular hand tools.

3rd gear synchro needs the entire mainshaft assembly out and the majority of the other synchros and stuff need to come off to get to the third gear portion.

To do the third gear synchro set, I'd spend just a little more and do them all, add new bearings, and other wear items...in other words a rebuild.

Try double clutching into third.

Having just finished rebuilding the T56 in my TransAm, I'll x2 the set of good snap ring pliers. I thought I had a good set....I was wrong. Other than that I don't think there is much to be affraid of i there. Find a good exploded view and go to town.

I rebuilt an sm465, new bearings syncros, snap rings and shift forks with nothing but a hammer and a couple screw drivers. You do have to press one gear off but since the syncro and bearings beneath it were in good shape I skipped that part, mostly needed to fix third gear.

That's the only manual tranny I've been in though. And I'll go ahead and cast another vote for snap ring pliers. I used what I had at the time but won't do it again without them.

I just rebuilt my nv4500, it wasnt to hard to do. There are a few bearings that having a special puller would make life easier but its doable with a couple sizes of 3 jaw pullers. Russell gave me this link Zieglerdigital.ca/public/downloads which has a step by step PDF

I have one I need to rebuild. I haven't done an NV4500 since college. NV5600's kind of suck.

Haven't done this yet, but I will probably be redoing mine in the next couple of months.

Nice combination on the truck. :thumb:
