how hard to swap gears from one 14FF to another????

here's the deal. i have a 14bolt with 3.73 gears and a gov lock that i was gonna put under my truck and conver to 8lug on my 10bolt. i have disks on this axle...and the shock mounts,spring perches,etc are where they need to be. i rebuilt the whole axle.

now, i bought some CUCV 14/60 combo but the axle looks like crap and need bearings and such. how tough would it be to swap the 4.56's and the detroit into the other axle. that would mean no welding of spring perchs/shock mounts...no converting to disks, and no cleaning the cucv axle.

is this easy, or am i better off just swapping the brakes over and having it all welded

a big point is I CAN"T WELD. i would have to take the axle somwhere to have it done. and that biatch is heavy/awkward.:D

Now, 14FF's are convenient 'cuz they have the slider adjusters on the sides, so no shims there... you'd hafta play with the pinion shims, though.

do you guys think that would be easier than doing it the other way which would include cleaning, swaping brakes...getting everything welded, and buying perches and spring mounts????

I HAVE NEVER SETUP GEARS...BUT WOULD LOVE TO LEARN HOW.
 
Yep, quite a bit easier to swap gears. The FF 14 bolt is one of the easiest ones to work on too.

If you decide to tackle it, we can walk you through it :D

Na it is easy man. Don't let them intimidate you . 14 bolt is simple to change gear's in . It is about the easiest axle to setup. It is a gool axle to learn on , and they are not to hard to setup. The pirate article is good , and good luck .
 
Since you're working with a 14 bolt, you can just take the entire pinion support and swap it over to the other axle. That way you won't have to deal with setting pinion bearing preload or pressing pinion bearings on or off.

You will need a dial indicator to check backlash.

I thought it was the shim behind the whole pinion assembly that set depth?

Yep. But if he moves the whole pinion assembly (which I called the pinion support) he won't have to mess with pinion bearing preload (pressing bearings on and off, replacing crush sleeve and pinion nut, setting pinion bearing preload, etc).

so i do need shims or no??? if i do, where can i get some. also, where can i get the gear marking compound(yellow stuff) so i can check everything. i bought a dial indicator and a magnetic base. i also bought a inch/pd torque wrench. i bought these before i got my CUCV axle cause i was gonna put 4.56 in the other one.
