How hot is too hot for a transfer case?

Got a 91 blazer with np241 tc. My case gets awfully hot on extended drives--like, I can't hold my hand on it for extended periods. Is this normal? Never owned one of these beasts before.

start with the easy first... check the fluid. its its empty i could see it doing that.. ive never really noticed mine getting hot, then again im really not feeling on it after a drive.

Check the fluid level, and if it's the correct stuff. It should be ATF. If someone put gear oil in it...that could cause it to run hot. Does it make any wierd noises? How close is the exhaust to it?

Drives fine. No noises. Correct ATF fluid and fresh. I just did the slip yoke eliminator on it and noticed it gets pretty darn warm. Never really touched it before the SYE conversion. Could someone touch their tc after a drive? Also just went to a 14 bolt with 4.56 gears and detroit locker--don't know if these things would generate more heat or not. Thanks.

I'll be running to town shortly, but from what I remember, mine was always at least warm.

Are you still going the same road speed? The 4.56's would be making the motor spin faster (I'm assuming you went from a 3.73 or 4.10) for the same road speed. The t-case would also be spinning faster...causing more heat.

I'm not familiar with the SYE kit's, but are there any shims to adjust clearances? Having it set up to tight would cause more heat.

Well, its tough to judge the temp of your t-case on the info you've provided. How long can you hold your hand on the t-case, what's the temperature tolerance of your skin etc. (these are rhetorical questions).

Is it possible that a bearings is failing inside the t-case and causing it to get hot? Yep.

IMO, it's probably normal and you have nothing to worry about. If you keep the right amount of the correct fluid in them, t-cases usually outlast the truck.

Mine was definitely "hot" but not something I'd be uncomfortable with. I bet a lot of the heat is coming off the trany and the exhaust.

Thanks much guys. I can hold my hand on the tc proper for about 3 to 5 seconds. The output shaft ring and yoke were mighty hot--2 seconds for the hand test. I checked the fluid after it cooled. It is still red and doesn't smell burned. Thanks again--I'll drive it til it blows up. I did have 3.73 gears before, and I did drive as fast as before (55).

The new bearings that came in the SYE kit may take some time to break in (unless it was a hack 'n tap). Keep any eye on it, but you are probably fine.

If you can touch it for 2 seconds it's fine. I think skin sizzles at like 140. 120 is damn hot on your hands.

that sounds pretty normal but just to be on the safe side check your rear yoke, make sure the nut is not coming loose on it. on the t case i mean
