I'm working on my '76 GMC Stepside today. Here is what I need to install and then tune for:

Edelbrock Performer 600 (1406 Electric Choke)
MSD HEI
MSD Cap/Rotor
Axcel Wires
Autolite Plugs
Spectre Air Cleaner

I'm going to attempt to do this while I'm at work this afternoon :dunno:

That should only take a couple hours. I'd use studs and nuts on the carb. Much easier to align the carb on there. Hopefully you have a timing light to get the distributor back where it needs to be. If you marked it before you pulled it and put the new one in the same spot you won't have to time it. The carb hopefully will be close out of the box. The idle is already factory preset and mine I just put on and ran fine. Had to adjust the throttle linkage a little but other than that left it alone. Plugs and wires self explanatory. Just make sure you get them in the correct firing order. And gap I usually to .040 with hei ignition. Some say you can go to .045 but I don't like it that big.
You must have a cool job you get to work on your truck while there.

I got it all done, took 3 hours total. Yes, I have an awesome job that allows me to work and play at the same time ;-)

I didnt go with studs and nuts because I'm not running a spacer on this one. I have studs on my Burb though with its 1" spacer.

Looks good. :waytogo:how does it run? Looks like everything went good for ya.

it's running VERY good! Went from a hesitant dog that fell on it's face to a truck that breaks free and begs for more :waytogo:

I gapped the plugs .045 and it seems to be running good......the PO had the stock QJet carb, stock distributor and Bosch plugs in it. It was 38 degrees advanced......:doah:

I have it currently set at 12 degrees advanced.

Using manifold vac instead of ported vac?

Just noticed that too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he should be using vacuum on the left side of the carb (facing it) for his distributor. It's the ported vacuum as you mentioned and is used for timed vacuum. Cap the right one off unless it goes to a transmission modulator valve or is used to capture fuel gases for emission controls.

Center port is for manifold vacuum to the PCV valve is hooked up correctly. The manifold vacuum port on the back of the carb goes to the power brake booster valve/master cylinder which is not hooked yet up in photo.

If I didn't get that right then mine is likely hooked up wrong. :haha:

You can run manifold vacuum for the distributor, but you'll probably want a vacuum advance limiter (crane makes a kit) that limits vacuum advance to a preset level and prevents too much overall advance. You may find a higher idle with manifold vacuum.

The debate between manifold and ported vacuum is a sure way to stir up a hornet's nest around here, lol.

I've ran either ported or full vacuum. Depends on build of engine and weights on distributor. I've found the right port is not as good in edelbrocks for my engine. I think ported is on left if I remember and it idles much better there. Inused the right port for vaccuum to the tranny modulator for full vaccuum. That's with a stock hei junkyard conversion so had stock weights and all. If it runs good the way it is I'd leave it. Try switching it in a couple weeks and see if it rims different and have fun with the new goodies.

Edelbrock tech video/ vacuum advance

:deal: FF to 1:50

According to the Edelbrock Teck videos you use the ported (timed vacuum) on the (upper left side) for manual transmissions.
The manifold vacuum (on the lower right side) goes to the transmission modulator valve in automatic transmissions.

now you guys have me all messed up! :dunno:

I'll play with today and see if it runs better the other way...........:doah:

You can complete it within 3 to 5 hours which depends according to the working speed.
