How many miles is to many on a used diesel pickup?

Best D'maxs are 06-07 old body style LBZ motors. The truck body/interior is not quite as good as the late models, but it was the first years for the 6 spd (vs 5 spd) Allison, they had worked out the injector issues from previous years caused by Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, and they hadn't put all the smog stuff on 'em yet. 8K would be hard to get one with - a good one anyway, but you never know.

I recently bought an '11 LML Duramax. Despite the exhaust filters etc, I love it.

Superduties have TTB factory, but it's in the 2 wheel drive variety. All 4x4 were leafs, then coils in 05+

I had a 7.3 OBS (95-97) for 2 years, I loved the truck. Bought it at 310, sold it at 338. I only had one part fail, the IDM, due to burned UVCH plugs. It's common on higher mileage 7.3s.

However in those years I dumped tons of cash into it because I can't leave anything alone... :D

Duramax you won't find one worth your time, or under 200K for under 9-10K. That's atleast how it is down here.

This is purely my opinion but I won't buy a dodge, the interiors are crap. Aside from the 4th gens, but given your above choices they're outside your budget/price range. No offense intended. I do however love the cummins engine, I wanted to swap a 24V into my OBS but I sold it before those plans got a chance to become a reality.

Post college however, I will have a square body crewcab shortbed with a built 24V 5 speed. :) graduation gift if you will. Ha

Oh Christ of course 2wd never crossed my mind.

I only considered 4wd trucks in my answer. And I only consider 4wd trucks for myself. 2wds are entirely irrelevant IMO

A friend has a '89 F-350 Super-Duty ramp truck ,2wd, that has a straight front axle and leaf springs...has a 460 5 spd, factory, only 68K on it right now,he bought it a few years ago--original owner bought it new ,who was a local used car dealer, and used it only sparingly, then a salvage yard bought it and basically put in their warehouse as a "back up" truck, and rarely ever used it..

My friend has known the salvage yard owner a long time,so he got a "deal" on it..he's already made twice what he paid for it just by hauling free or cheap junkers to the scrapyard..

Always good to do the math to see if a big block is cheaper. How many miles will you put on it and will the fuel cost ever make up for the price difference?

Went and looked at a 2000 F350 7.3 4x4 crewcab yesterday, 238k on it, asking 6k obo. First thing I noticed was no tailgate and the front shaft sitting in the bed.:doah: Front seats and center console are rough, backseat looks good, body is straight. Called the guy and he says the front end is fine, driveshaft came apart, just needs a new one, and in the process of coming off it knocked a plug off the transmission that he has temporarily fixed but hasn't replaced yet so shifting to 2nd is a little funny some times but the truck is perfectly driveable as is.

It's a small town so I know someone who knows him or his dad I'm sure, so I don't believe he's making the story up, gonna try to set up a time to drive it today, does the plug on the side of the transmission messing with the shifting make sense?

For sure. They are electronic controlled trannies. Mess a sensor and it may go into limp mode or just have a driveability issue.

Some quick googling looks like it cold be the 12 pin connector for the Transmission Range Sensor. One guy reported a P0705 code and hard shifts every now and then, ended up being lose at the junction box. Sounds legit.

Bought the truck today! Kind of low balled the guy and he took it immediately... guess I didn't go low enough. Here's to learning about diesels and Fords :doah:

$3500, lot of redneck wiring going on though, hope I'm not in over my head. Don't guess there are any Ford guru's around here are there?:doah:

Thanks!:D

Well the wires got ripped off the transmission range sensor, and they said that's when the shifting problems started. They soldered the wires back on, but I can't tell if they got the pinout right and i can't find a wiring diagram or a testing procedure for the harness. 12 pin connector but only 11 are there, one of the slots is empty.

And there's a plug and a couple of other wires dangling.:doah:

Random wires with crimp on ends...

Loose plug, all of these are next to the trans/TC

They've made a mess of things.

After some digging, looks like the loose wires and plug go to the TC shift motor which is not there... not a big deal right now, not to worried about 4wd atm.

Nice! I bought my 2000 with 175k, now with 250k and going strong. If you are going to be pulling big loads put a tranny cooler out of a 6.0l in it. It bolts right up, just need to get some high temp line and some 3/8 to 1/2 barbs. Let me know if you need pics of any wiring or anything else and I I will take them for you.
