can't decide what direction you want to go with your rig? 1 day i'll think to myself, "i'm going to make it a reliable/comfortable daily driver that i can take out on the weekend and have no problems with" then i'll start thinking, "i need to start looking for a truck and trailer i can pull the K5 with when it's not legal to drive on the street". i also change my mind with other things like what axles to run, what engine, trans, t-case, tires... i've been tossing around doing 1 tons (in the middle of 3/4 ton swap right now) then i'll get the idea to do rocks with rear steer.

am i the only one that has this problem???

heh, funny you mention this. when I first got my truck I had a game plan for it and pretty much stuck to it. Now my interests lie else where with the same truck. B4 I was wanting to build a stout mow down anything truck, now im interested in the pre-runner style. its not feasible to buy other vehicles so Ill just change things a bit and hope it works out. lol.

Haha, same story here. I transfer in 2 months and will finally be able to start my Burb build. I tried to start a build sheet for it and everytime I go back to it I change it. I go from clean-stockish looking with ~8in lift and 38.5's, to narrowed front, bobbed back, 4in lift sawzalled to stuff 42's haha. I'm sure I'll end up somewhere in the middle of those two.:haha:

I've been working on my K5 project for 4 yrs now. I've changed plans and build parts more in those 4 yrs than I did the whole time I had my previous truck (17 yrs). :surepal:

I spent 10 years with my '81 K5...didn't do much to it the first three or four years...then started to get into the plan as I saw it. A very capable, street legal(ish) rig that was comfortable and fun. One requirement was seats and belts for four so my wife and kids could come wheeling with me, or just even day to day driving with them.

Somewhere along the way I got carried away.

Now I'm about to wipe the page clean and restart with a crew cab as a foundation. I've got some very clear ideas of what I want this time and don't plan to stray from it either. Having 4 doors will make some things a lot easier, having a bit more wheelbase will make it less manueverable, but it'll climb better and have better driveline angles.

Beleive me your not the only one. I think most of us want a street legal rig. I just bought a blazer a couple of months ago and had plans to keep it looking nice and road worthy. needless to say plans have changed.

Man I am right in that point of life or build what the heck do I do. Gas is going thru the roof so it weighs big on what do I do? So far 73 k -5 I have spent a lot on the stock drive train since it is my daily driver. I dont see it getting more then a 2 inch lift I have 31 mud T/As on it but since I love to fabricate things and have the tools I could get lost in my quest to build a nice hunting rig its a SICKNESS I tell ya. I see metal and just know who ever designed it did it wrong and it must be changed at all cost. And then I have those days that what I really want is a wheel standing gasser on the street I think thats a PINKS hangover. I just know its a SICKNESS.

Same issues

It's been about two years now and I'm still working on it, trying to build something that's special to me. You get ideas and learn from other people's adventures. I would like tio build a mudder truck, but it wouldn't be legal and I don't have the $$ for a trailer and tow vehicle. So for me it's gotta be a street legal weekender.

heck, after i blew my original engine, i was almost ready to part out the rest of the k5 and buy a zr2. less capable offroad but better mpg and possibly more reliable because of age. instead, i plopped a more powerful engine in there, bought bigger more aggressive tires and just last weekend installed a 4" lift. nothing all that extreme, but a far cry from getting rid of it altogether. i won't go taller though, because i like it to fit in my garage. i have about 1.5" clearance now.

One of my main problems is getting it in the garage thought of doing a small winch to pull down the rear to back in but ill just go with 2 inch so my bird dog can get in and out.

mine doesn't fit in a garage, it also doesn't fit in most parking garages around town...

I've had multiple trucks in the past 10 years and ranged from pretty stockers to long travel fast movers (ish). Finally with Big Ugly I think I've got the basics figured out. Stockish, small lift, 38" radials, cut to fit, and the rest just driveability and capability. I'm past the hard core wheeling phase so as long as it can do the trails I want to do and then get me to work if I need it as an interim DD or down to Home Depot with the trailer I'm good.

It just takes time and a dose of reality.

I cant decide what to do. I just found out that the last 6-10 inches of my frame at the top of the channel is rusted through pretty bad. Now I'm trying to figure out if I want to fix it or bob, and dovetail it. Doh:doah::doah:

I thought about restoring mine , then I wheeled it , then I bought a second truck to wheel so I can restore mine , then I sold the second rig and kept wheeling mine . Now I have a second rig ONCE AGAIN so I can restore my Blazer .

I learned one thing , if you actually love wheeling you need something that actually runs ALL THE TIME , garage kept projects stay in the garage and never leave until you sell them . Thats why my Blazer is all dented , I can't sit by and webwheel when the weathers nice .

A 12 bolt in the rocks is better than a Dana 60 in a garage :wink1:

I am gonna follow through on wheeling the second rig this time , and let the Blazer be the rig that never leaves the garage , I need a couple years to collect cash and pretty parts anyway .

I can't decide for mine.. I still need to get it running good for the street :o
runnin hasnt been my problem.getting it legal has.i got all the drivetrain good but the body is falling off.damn rust belt pa claims anether victim

None of that to worry about here.... my body is pristine aside from a couple bad spots in the floor pans :D I'm registered.. just need to get my carb back and start on the exhaust, then brakes. I am stuck on the exhaust, not sure what I want to do but it's gonna be cheap for now.

Ive had my blazer for 7 years now. originally stock with 31's, got drunk one night decided to go wheeling got stuck walked 5 miles. next it got a 6" lift and 36 swampers and completely refinished all the body panels primmered and preped for a custom paint (flame job) built custom bumpers. 2 weeks later was out wheeling through some fields in the snow and launched it off a 4' bank and knocked the arch out of the lift springs folded all the fenders/ wheel well opens up. went out bought a new lift. (8") said screw the paint job. drove for bout 2 more years toasted the auto trans. swapped in the 406ci block added a sm465 and installed a np205 twin stick. bought some 38 boggers and bout 2 weeks ago picked up some 11/4 ton mitilary axles for it. id say give it a couple more years and ill have no fenders and chopped rear bed. Its never ending.
