stock heads & valvetrain...how much lift before valve hits head, or spring bottoms out or stud pulls out...whats a safe lift?

The cams that you'll want to use with a stock headed application doubtfully will max out the springs. If you insist on over camming there there are .500 and .450 lift springs on ebay for sbc heads for like $30.

Best place to browse would be on summit. You want something thats range is idle to 4500ish which will equate to lower numbers. The more lift you have the later the rpm range the power comes out.

i plan on hydroboost brakes and a sm465.....i want my truck, uh...lopety lope....its a mud flinger and thats all it does, beside crawlin the streets. i don't know any other way to get the sound i want w/o over camming it...i was looking at these cams:

.465/.488......298/304.....224/234......112LC moderate idle
.480/.480......288/288.....230/230......109LC lopey idle

how can i get the idle and sound i want w/o over camming? flinging mud w/ a standard

it seems the lower LC lopes more...maybe a reasonable custom cam w/ like 102LC?

Small lobe centerline and lots of overlap are what makes a lopy cam.
