i am fixing to install a set of doug thorley headers on the k5 and i want to wrap them up. how much header wrap should i need? and any particular brand to use or just whatevers cheapest?

you'll void any warranty... traps moisture.

I can see maybe wrapping some cheapie Summits, but not a quality header like a Thorley..

You shouldn't use any header wrap it makes the headers rust through quickly. It will also void any warranty that the headers may come with.

I type way too slow.

I think I used 20 feet three years ago on my DT's...........and nary a problem. You can touch the wrap with a warmed up engine..........

rust through more quickly? how long are we talking? years? anyway my reason for doing so is to keep from melting the sparkplug wires, keep underhood temps down, and keeping the heat in the exhaust will help it burn cleaner.

I don't know much about the thorleys, but are these coated? If they are, is the coating inside the tubes as well? Pointless to wrap if they are internally coated.

To be honest, I've not noticed any difference between headers and manifolds in underhood heat, but that is based solely on engine operating temps.obviously wrap or internal coating does reduce heat shedding greatly...one magazine test I saw for internal coating was a 300* surface temp decrease.

I agree with the others about the wrap rotting them out. That said, I dont blame you for wanting to wrap them. My k5 is my DD and it used to have ceramic coated long tube headers on it, the floor boards would get so hot that you could not drive it with out some type of clothing on your fee. Granted I only have a thin coat of rhino liner on my floors, its still a lot of heat coming into the cab. It was pretty brutal in the summer, I was about to wrap mine but I ended up ditching them and going back to manifolds.

Mine get hot, but not that hot. I expect the external coatings do SOMETHING to keep the heat inside, as mine are. I have nothing on my floor. But that is why the internal coatings are so awesome. That should be standard, external coatings should be optional. :)
