Haven't posted here in a while.... But I have been watching :whistle::whistle:

I know I can always trust you guys. I've got my eye on a k5. 1978 Tbi, 700r4, np241, Ord lift, 33x12.5 Mickeys, Two sets of rims (chrome, white spoke) Fresh Paint to original two tone. Truck needs nothing. Its ready to go. And ready to break my bank.

16k

Is this too much? I've always spent around 5k for rust free rigs. Needless to say this feels like alot. But the truck is mint.

Wow. That's a lot of coin for a '78 with the wrong year of drivetrain parts in it.

A '78 will generally have a SBC, TH350 and NP203 unless its got an SM465 with an NP205 behind that.

What I'm getting at is that if you're not savvy about the truck then when the time comes to get new or replacement parts for the drivetrain, you're going to have a cluster**** with the parts stores and countermen since neither of you will be able to get the correct parts you need.

But if you know everything about the truck and know what year(s) of rigs those newer pieces came out of then you can do it if you feel like it.

I think I'll speak for others here when we say to buy a K5, bone stock, for cheap and modify it your way with your money and labor. This way you'll know it was built, not bought.

I'd much rather buy a rust free rig for $5K and put more into it knowing it will have EXACTLY what I want in it.

well I spent a ton of time poking around this truck. All the parts were swapped from the same donor and any new parts were gm originals. I've had 5 of these now, done different things to them, 350's to 383's, bashers and clean ones. The cost adds up fast. This was done how I would do it and I would assume he has at least the asking price into it or more (depending on purchase price). I have a 12 valve waiting to drop in if I ever felt like it. But as it sits, its a "like new" DD.

But.... try finding a 78' for 16k hahaha...
Never seen one for this much (that wasn't at a dealer)

Sounds like it's clean.

Don't dismiss something like that, if it's done right. Don't buy into the "built not bought" thing. Nobody "builds" anything for most street vehicles. They just buy aftermarket parts and simply install them. If you find something that is very close to what you would do with a blank slate, and you know their price is considerably less than what they have in it, you can save yourself a bunch of time and money. Then just come in and do a few finishing touches to make it the way you like it and be done.

Dumping a bunch of money into these older trucks is fun, but in no way financially a good move. I probably have $30K into my K5, it's probably worth half that.

speak for yourself...

gee, pull a 100k drivetrain from a late 80's K5, throw it in a 78, with "god knows what done to it bodywork-wise prior to paint" for 16k?

it's probably a 6, 7 g truck...

X2.....Bring it to the east coast, 8 -10 at the most.

For 16 large, I could build a nice rock truck, a trailer and half a tow rig......But that's just me.

For that price I'd certainly expect something better than a TBI 350, and a 700r4.

I would like to see pics though.

For 16k it better be linked and coiled.

In my eyes, even the nicest of these rigs, if they are still stock style suspension and drivetrain, max value to me is at about 10g in great shape and nice paint.

Now once you go cage drive train and suspension etc. Then the price goes up in my eyes.

There are a few exceptions...you'd be one of them. :thumb:

thanks... I get what you're saying, just defending those who do some creative fab/mods on driven rigs.. not everyone builds their rigs based on bolt on's from LMC, Summit and ORD...

At the risk of being the peacemaker....

You can tell by the responses that people have a tendancy to buy stock and build to their taste: One said he could make a rock truck, another would want it set up for sand. Ryoken just wants a bumper bracket and will fab the rest of the truck around it.

Even so, if you're not dedicated to a long truck build or, in your case, you found one you're in love with - done well, with mods you approve of - 16K isn't necessarily a bad deal. You might get a bunch of crap for not building it or paying too much, but truth be told, anyone with a built truck has way more in it than they intended.

Anyway, you already bought it. I hope you get your money out of it. Also, another vote for pics.
