I've been wondering and trying to figure out how much it will cost to buy and completely rebuild a set of tons or 5/4's. Some of you guys have done just that so I figured I'd ask. what have you guys got into your tons. (with detroits and rear discs prefferably)

Just wondering what to start setting aside:rolleyes: and I found a place to buy them setup like that all done and ready to go in. I'm gonna see how they compare.

Rick, with lockers, one new set of gears, all the bearings, seals, disc kit, kingpin repair (remember the hogged out kingpin issue I had?), and Kerts Flatback covers, I got about 3500 in mine...I know that is a lot more than most out there, but its what it took to make mine right....that included about 650$ in labor and acid stripping costs also.

I woulnt be surprised to see 3-4000$
You figure $1100 give r take for a set of cucv axles if your lucky. That might help offset the gearing and locker costs if you don't end up changing it.

I have 500 just in a rebuild on the front 60 that doesn't include regearing thats just all the bearings, races, seals, kingpins, rotors, calipers,Lock nuts,Inner axle seals ,and U-joints.

the rear is about the same, maybe a little cheaper .

i'd say an easy 1000.00 just to rebuild

I think the 3k number is a good one to shoot for. It may come in way lower but if the axles are hammered, which is not always evident upon initial inspection, you will be there easy

I bought a complete m1028 for $1500, swapped discs for about $250 and ran them. The front has a trac lok or whatever, but it leaves a lot to be desired. Used the trans and case, sold the carcass for 300 bucks. The guy never picked it up after paying for it, so I've still got it.

This is exactly the route I want to go but if I couldnt find one I had thought of going this route http://www.boyceequipment.com/pricelist/pricelist.html#Truck Axles
Its $5g though:eek1: Thought it was a better deal than that till I figured it up. what is a detroit soft locker for the 60:dunno:

Now I know how bad there ripping off people. I'll have to make my axles a part of the project and do slow builds the fun way:D

I just kept looking for a deal. Found the truck on craigslist. The guy knew what he had and still made a deal on them. Truck wouldnt start, but it only had 5X,XXX miles showing. The deals are out there, just keep your eyes open. I didnt even change brake pads on the front. I literally bolted it in, spent 5 minutes bleeding the brakes, and drove it. Never worried about it. We pulled the cover to see if it had the trac lok in it or if it was open.

I put new hubs on it down the road because I wanted some bling warn hubs. Still running the stock brakes two years later. I honestly dont think there is a better way to do the swap unless you get a smoking deal on a set that need minimal work.

I found one about 4 hours from me for 1800 that supposedly runs and drives. but I cant do anything with it right now anyway:confused: I wish I could. I think I want to find a regular 1 ton anyway. I'm told the mil trucks are np208. I want the 454/400/205/60/14 combo to put in mine.

If I had been smart and not awestruck I would have noticed the 6 bolts and not bought the truck I did. Oh well. at least I now know what direction to go. Thanks guys:thumb:

I paid $750 for my D60 so the purchase price along with a FULL rebuild cost (including gears) and crossover steering stuff i'm into mine $3500 and I did all the labor myself.

Remember, '4x4' in uppercase is '$X$'.

Wow... That's absolutely perfect!:haha:

I bought my 5/4's for $1100, + $70 shipping, then rear discs, kingpin springs/bushings, axle joints, spindle seals/bearings, new lockouts, wheel bearings and seals, plus a diff cover for the rear and gear lube for both I'm in at about 2g's. I wouldn't have spent that much but shipping for the small parts and the cost of oil products out here is ridonculous:doah:
