My dad is lookin at a motorhome with one of these things and needs to know how much tq it makes. the owner says its a 190 hp but the book says the 89's were 160 hp and 400 ft lbs.

I know the 12v cummins 5.9 is 190 hp and 475 ft lbs but those came out a lot later right?

did the owner do a swap or did they make 190 hp cummins in 89?

Also was it turboed?

thanks in advance.

It is a 12valve motor. Until '98.5 all 6bt's were. The T stands for turbo as well.

You are looking at dodge spec's, which were de-tuned alot so the rest of the truck would survive. The 6bt is not a dodge specific motor, dodge just had a contract with cummins. That motor came in thousands of applications and many different power ratings, same with the ISB. Highest rating you can get an ISB in a dodge is 325 hp, but you can get them over 600hp factory rated in marine applications.

Being in a motorhome, it is most likely 190hp, maybee higher.

yeah, we got the hp figured out but we need to know the torque specs before we can decide to go built 454 or dies.
It is easily well over 400 ft lbs of torque. That is the same engine that is found in an '89 Dodge Cummins and I'm sure it makes more power. Stock Dodges where 175/400. I'd guess that RV is around 190/450 or so. Going from an inline cummins diesel to a gas sucking BBC would be a big step backwards IMHO. If he wants to get decent mileage and pull hills well the cummins that is already in it is the ticket. Obviously since gas RV's are gone and replaced with diesel versions now. My grandparents had a 454 powered RV, was completely gutless.
