How many quarts of tranny fluid does a 700R4 take?

I am out changing my fluid right now (I'm a first timer here) so wish me luck.

That's 5 quarts if you're just dropping the pan, changing the filter and refilling. If it's a new tranny with a new torque convertor, you'll need closer to 12 quarts. My Turbo 400 with the factory deep pan took 14 quarts the first time I filled it up.

I'm pretty sure that the 700R4 takes slightly less. Somewhere around 10-12 quarts for a total fill.

It's a great day to be alive...

If you are draining the fluid and the filter you should just go get a bigger trans pan. It will hold 2 extra quarts of fluid. The one I got is cast aluiminum cost about 120.00 bucks. And I plan on getting an extra trans cooler. These auto trans like to burn up easy. I don't know just an Idea for yeah.....

Could having to much fluid in the tranny make it so it won't shift out of first gear?

Mine took between 4 and 5. Put 4 in and drive it a little, then add more if needed. I think you really need to have the right amount, havign too much is probably bad for it. make sure you get it warm enough before you add more, I didn't wait long enough, checked it and it was low, drove around for a while, checked it again, and it was really high. Harder to take out than put in.

Thats the same thing I did, I didn't warm it up long enough before I added more fluid. I guess you learn from your mistake.
