Good grief. Is there ever a simple repair without the discovery of another? I'm getting exhaust fumes in the cab when the blower is on and I hear that pft pft pft like an exhaust leak (for quite some time). I have been running on this for years. I finally decide to do the exhaust mani gasket and donut gasket and I see one of my runners jiggle while cleaning it. I pry back the preheater shield thing (apparently it was holding it together) and pull this out. Is this common? Do all 350 tbi use the same manifold (for the boneyard)?

Don't bother with boneyard ones. Last time I bought one from Napa they were not that much money. Was a while ago and they were guarenteed. Assuming TBI? Could have air leak causing lean condition. Which it will run hot and crack.

I've heard this twice now. The oreilly by me has one for $102. Probably worth the hassle of maybe finding it, rusty bolts, already cracked, etc. I don't know the history of the engine, but it runs great right now.

It isn't uncommon for them to crack, but most exhaust manifolds around here that fail are due to rust, they flake off layer after layer until they are very thin, then get hot,and one good dousing when you drive through a deep puddle can cause them to crack when they get thin..
Most crack where yours did..they expand and contract quite a bit--often you cant bolt one up again once it is removed without hogging the bolt holes out they shrink so much..they even sell "spreader" tools to make installing them easier, but cast iron doesn't like being "stretched"..usually cracks instead..
I have heated a manifold up in my wood stove a few times and used welding gloves to hold it while I get the bolts in !..

Some of the aftermarket ones aren't good quality, they too can have a short life..ones sold under the Dorman name are usually pretty good--new ones with a "no name" brand often sold at salvage yards are often cheap china crap that crack easily ,I have seen more than one crack while being installed, and one that had cracks right out of the box..look them over good before you leave the parts store !..

I had the left manifold develop a small crack, about a 1/2 inch long,on my 1990,it was about 10 years old at the time, and right around 120000 miles, got a new Napa one,it is still good at 245000 miles, the right side one is still original
