How repairable is this?

I’ve searched this forum extensively but have found nothing on this specific area, although I could be searching the wrong terms.

Purchased a ‘91 K5 and after tinkering on the mechanics of it, I’m trying to evaluate the bodywork that needs completed. The PO painted everything with POR15 years ago and put some time into fixing the rust, however he then passed and it sat in humid HI for years before I purchased it.

The only area I don’t know about is the bottom of the windshield frame on the corners where it meets the hood. I talked to a gentleman out here who fixed his by tacking in mesh and reshaping the area with filler

Disclaimer: I am not looking for perfecton. I’m looking to preserve the structure/integrity and have a solid base for

I would like to preserve this body for functional purposes, as every thing else is fairly solid. Truck is more of a worker then a looker anyways

fixable for sure with some creative patching.. keep in mind, the question you have to ask yourself, is if it's showing there, where else up high is it ready to come thru next?

and obviously there are varying degrees of a proper repair, removing the bad metal, sandblasting the surrounding area, weld thru primers, yada.

rot up high in these around the windshield and door jambs can unfortunately often be the death nail for these rigs.... i junked a 77 for that and I've done tons of rust repair...

** For me ** that type of rust has always been the kiss of death. Imo, to really fix it you're going to need to remove the fender to see how far down that goes.

i had a clean cab with perfect windshield frame . pulled the glass and set the cab out for media blast to remove all old paint and rust from sitting after a wiring fire under the dash . when i got my cab back i had the solid cab still but had 4 patches to make / fix in the windshield frame area that were not even bubbling the paint before hand .

as said this is a major junction point area and also strength area . i would look long and hard at the rest of the firewall area and make sure its not worse than you think it is .

Thank you for the advice gentlemen, I will order a new windshield seal and plan a day to try and isolate all the rot/rust. I figured it might be more then meets the eye, but thought I would check and see if anyone had thoughts on the area. I will update as I advance through this.

My old 83 rusted through in the same spots, when i was installing clutch pedals last year i noticed it had cracked the firewall under that area on the drivers side. Mine was wheeled but it was weakened by that rust.

Sweetk30, thanks for the link. You do great work
