How strong are 10 bolts really?

Hi All,

I ask b/c I just picked up a M1009 with the 10 bolts, 6.2 diesel, and t400. I will be swapping the d60/14B w/4.56s gov-lock & L/S from a M1028 when I save a little green.

But until then, I have the M1009 on 37 HMMWV tires, and it will see the southern california desert when we race- (we race desert trucks-this is not a race vehicle obviously) and up the backside to Big Bear, which is, I think moderate trails- rocks the size of fullsize ice chests give or take.

I know I can't haul donkey down the whoops, but mainly I'm asking what will break/bust/explode on the 10B and under what conditions on the rock trails. i.e. all weight on one wheel? vertical climbs? etc...all the above?

we run 10 inch big dogs in all our desert trucks w/ 40 splines, so I'm really inexperienced with the 4x4 stress and abuse and the 10B in general.

I will need the 10Bs in working order to swap into the M1028 to drive/sell it afterwards.

Thanks,

Dave

I wouldnt recommend it
1.Gearing issues, you likely have 3.08 front/rear,the th400 1st gear isnt exactly a granny low and a 6.2 isnt any kind of torque monster. Increasing tire size drastically when your already geared poorly for smaller tires will just make it even worse. Only advantage you have is the 208 has a pretty low 4wd low gear.
2.Traction,Your most likely either running a gov bomb in the rear and with 37''s in the rocks from what ive heard you wont be running it for very long. Or your running a open dif which will be power hopping all over the place while your trying to get over these rocks which will snap a u-joint/shaft in quick order.

With open differentials in the rocks and that big of tires i'd be pretty scared of any kind of power hopping since it would likely be the end of your stub/shaft u-joint. Learned that the hard way and i was only running 33's.

p.s Any links to your racing rigs? :D

Gotblazer,

Thanks! I know they aren't strong, but I did not know the weak link- (other than the whole thing), and yes, it is 3.08 gears and it does bring the suck already.

I will swap with M1028, but that might be as long as 3 months, and I want to see nature every weekend. :waytogo:

I will take it easy for now and see what happens.

Here's one of our trucks. Jono is the owner/driver. I can't post urls yet but go to PsychoticRacing dot com and there you go.

We are also ODR, but no website, I will get photos of our other trucks.

Thanks again,

Dave

Ah well then i'd watch out for the shafts/u-joints as i said earlier. Not like you have to worry about breaking any R&P's with that set up :haha: . Something i didnt mention earlier is that you are going to get some kind of epic bumpsteer :doah:.

Make sure to post up some pics/vids of how the beast does. Once your past 5 post or so you can link pics/vids from photobucket/yt or wherever you like.

p.s That racing page was pure greatness Those jumps looks scary as **** but i Gotta build me one of those things some day when i win the lottery.

Axle shafts are the weakest part, then carrier itself. gov-Lock carrier in a 10 bolt is the most likely weakest link, but I thought the M1009's were open in the rear?

I will be swapping the d60/14B w/4.56s gov-lock & L/S from a M1028 when I save a little green.

The 1028 donor would have the D60 front with a Trash Lock, and a Detroit Locker in the 14 bolt rear. No Gov-Lock...

I wheeled a 10 bolt for about 1.5 years before upgrading to my d60. In that time I blew up one carrier assy. and about 3 u joints (which took out both inner and outer shaft) It was under a 79 K10 that had 35x12'' Goodyear mtr's.

However, that being said, one guy i wheel with has a 10 bolt front under an S-10 blazer fitted with a Detroit locker and Yukon chromoly shafts. He has 35x16" Boggers and a strong 350 (I would say around the 400 horse mark). in the past 3 years Ive been wheeling with him he has only blown hubs.

My old K5 had 10 bolts on both ends. It was a 350 truck on 35's. I broke the spider gears on the rear, but the truck had over 150,000 and was already lifted, and the tires were worn out, and the guy I bought it from was an active wheeler. You can't go hammering on them, but they don't just fall out because you rolled a big tire up next to the truck like people make it sound.
